It’s Not Too Late to Have It All: 5 Benefits of a Small School

A Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) teacher extends her arm over a student’s artwork while the student holds a scrunched paper towel above a piece of paper with painted colors on it at a classroom table. There’s also a laptop on the table and another table in back of the student with paintings and drawings laid out on it.

Santa Clarita Valley International School (SCVi) may be small in size, but our offerings and benefits are mighty! Our size is precisely what allows us to offer tuition-free academics, support that fits the individual child, and a community that cares. Here are five big benefits you can expect when your child attends our TK-12 in the greater Santa Clarita Valley.

Even better? It’s not too late to enroll. Don’t settle for anything less than the best for your child’s education.

1. Everyone Knows Your Name

At SCVi, no child slips through the cracks. Their social and emotional needs are known by all on our staff, and the characteristics that make them special are appreciated. Because we are a small school, every learner is known by name and has support from their facilitator, paraprofessionals, counselors, and administrators. This familiarity builds confidence, as students feel comfortable and supported. Our students know each other well, too: our small school TK-12 model enables students to spend years together, developing close friendships and sharing developmental stages and milestones.

2. Customized Support

Our smaller student base enables our teachers to understand the academic struggles and strengths of our students, and we have the time to creatively respond with opportunities for enrichment or support. Every learner has an individualized learning plan (ILP) and we offer many different ways of learning: self-directed, career-connected, arts-integrated and always play- and project-based. In our Upper School, we support you with college and career planning, customized just for you!

3. High-Quality Education

With the amount of care and quality we give each of our students, it’s hard to believe that SCVi is a free public school, but we are! Besides strong academics, you can do Spanish dual immersion, an Aerospace Pathway for all grades, and clubs like Robotics.

4. Social-Emotional Learning

Learning how to be a good friend, learner, and leader starts in elementary school at our free public TK-12 and never stops. SCVi integrates several social-emotional learning (SEL) programs, like Leader in Me, which emphasizes the importance of kindness and finding solutions that work for everyone. Our goal is to provide an environment in which our learners can create, explore, problem-solve, accomplish, support others, and become confident leaders. Once learners are older, they become mentors to our younger students, modeling study habits and behavior for our little ones to follow.

5. Our Families

We are a tight-knit community where staff and facilitators know every student – and their families – by name. SCVi parents love the high level of partnership they experience with our teachers and staff to support student learning. Parent contact with classroom facilitators is easy in our small school. There is frequent communication between teachers and parents about student performance, and parent help is welcomed. We value close relationships with our students’ families.
