FAQ’s for SCVi’s IB Career-Related Programme: A Global Path to Career Readiness

Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School, a tuition-free public charter school in Castaic, is proud to be an authorized IB World School for the Career-related Programme (CP).

For our juniors and seniors, that means access to a rigorous, real-world curriculum that blends academic depth with career-focused learning, all without leaving campus, and at no cost to families.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) about our program
What Is the IB Career-related Programme?
The IB CP is a two-year program designed for juniors and seniors who want to build career skills while still earning an internationally recognized education. Rather than choosing between “college prep” and “career prep,” CP learners get both. Combining the IB Diploma Programme (DP) coursework with a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway, gives learners the flexibility to pursue their passions while staying grounded in strong academics.
At SCVi, the CP structure includes:
- At least two IB Diploma Programme courses from two different subject groups—currently English Language and Literature HL and Design Technology SL, each spanning the full two years.
- The CP Core, made up of Personal and Professional Skills (PPS), the Reflective Project, Language and Cultural Studies, and Community Engagement.
- A Career-related Study, chosen from SCVi’s CTE pathway options.
What is the Reflective Project?
The Reflective Project is one of the most distinctive parts of the CP Core. Over about 50 hours, learners identify and investigate a real ethical dilemma connected to their career studies. It’s not a typical research paper: learners weigh perspectives, check their sources for bias, and land on a thoughtful, well-supported position of their own. It’s the kind of assignment that builds the exact skills colleges and employers say they want: critical thinking, self-management, and the ability to communicate a clear, balanced argument.
What is Community Engagement, and how much time does it involve?
Community Engagement is SCVi’s take on service learning. Learners spend a minimum of 50 hours identifying an issue they care about in their community and taking real action to address it. Along the way, they explore the issue, get involved, and reflect on what they learned. It’s a meaningful way for learners to build empathy, awareness, and a stronger sense of their place in the world, all values SCVi families consistently tell us they appreciate.
What does it take to earn the CP certificate?
To earn the CP certificate, learners must:
- Complete their chosen CTE pathway
- Achieve a grade of 4 or higher in at least two of their IB DP subjects
- Earn a passing grade (A–D) on the Reflective Project
- Fulfill all requirements for PPS, Community Engagement, and Language and Cultural Studies
Every candidate receives an official CP results certificate reflecting their achievement across all these areas—a credential recognized by colleges and universities around the world.
Why does the IB CP matter for SCVi learners?
The IB CP reflects everything SCVi stands for: preparing learners not just for a test, but for life. Graduates leave with career-ready skills, a global perspective, and the critical thinking habits that come from tackling real ethical questions rather than hypothetical ones. Whether a learner is headed straight to a four-year university, a career pathway, or still deciding, the CP gives them an academic and practical foundation that flexes with their goals.
How does the IB CP connect to other SCVi programs?
Combined with SCVi’s 1:1 college counseling and College Connect dual enrollment, the IB CP is one more way our Upper School learners graduate with real options and the confidence to choose the one that’s right for them.
