iLEAD Learner Outcomes Spell Out Success
At Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School, a tuition-free TK-12th grade public school in Castaic, California, we see the leader in your child. We engage learners
with a high-quality, rigorous academic education but we’ve also included ways to build leadership and interpersonal skills. Through our innovative iLEAD approach, students aren’t just passive recipients of knowledge—they’re active, successful participants who develop essential life skills through project-based learning, creative expression, and social-emotional growth.
Letting Students Take the Lead
At our small, connected school, we believe that education should extend beyond traditional academic knowledge. Our purposeful approach revolves around the iLEAD Schoolwide Learner Outcomes, a collective vision we have for every one of our learners.
Learners lead by being a:
Lifelong Learner
I am a self-directed learner, focused on personal growth and development.
What makes learning exciting? At SCVi, we want our learners to be involved and self-directed in their learning. We use project-based learning (PBL) because it engages students. Completing projects means it’s a time to celebrate with presentations of learning (POLs), and at the end of the year, both facilitators and learners give their own showcases of learning, based on their achievements and growth toward those particular goals they set at the start of the school year.
Ultimately, seniors give a senior portfolio presentation, reflecting on their time in school.
What is self-direction? Learners develop an ability to set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement. They learn to see setbacks as opportunities for growth, and to be more adaptive.
Empathetic Citizen & Authentic Individual
I seek to understand and appreciate what others are thinking, feeling, or experiencing.
I am true to myself, my personality, values, beliefs, and principles.
Grouping these two outcomes together because they are so intertwined: at SCVi, we value and integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) into every day. SEL is at the heart of all we do and it complements our academic learning all day long. We use the Leader in Me’s educational program, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. These habits stress the importance of self and social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. Having the chance to build upon these habits year after year really encourages lifelong behaviors.
At our small TK-12 grade school, we teach a growth mindset because learners with a growth mind-set believe in themselves. They trust their abilities and believe their hard work will pay off; they persist to overcome obstacles. In the process, they also learn from and support each other, and see the relevance of their schoolwork to the real world and their own future success.
Design Thinker
I am a creative, imaginative individual who explores original ideas, takes risks, and develops innovative solutions that I share with others.
Creating art is integrated into our projects and curriculum at SCVi. Our arts education program nurtures artistic talents and encourages creative thinking. We encourage learners to develop the resilience and innovation needed in today’s rapidly changing world.
In addition to art, new this past year we added an Aerospace Career-Connected Learning Pathway, that prepares students for further studies or jobs in the local aerospace industry. While focused in high school, all grades are involved– younger grades might study the effect of gravity while our 8th graders learn how to design and fly a glider.
The iLEAD Schoolwide Learner Outcomes at SCVi serve as our compass, guiding us as learners grow– grow with us and join our supportive, tuition-free WASC-accredited school and enroll today!
