Social-Emotional Learning: Building Skills for Life at SCVi

Want your child to succeed not just in school, but in life? At Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School, a tuition-free TK-12th grade public school in Castaic, California, we know that academic achievement and emotional well-being go hand in hand. That’s why social-emotional learning (SEL) is woven into everything we do, from morning meetings to project presentations.
Why Social-Emotional Skills Matter
Social-emotional learning helps children acquire skills to manage emotions (self-management), nurture positive relationships (relationship skills), make informed choices (responsible decision-making), and feel and exhibit empathy (self and social awareness).
Rather than hope students develop these skills on their own, SCVi integrates SEL directly into the curriculum. We measure SEL as part of every individualized learning plan (created for every learner) and Report of Progress, so you always know how your child is growing, both academically and socially. Research shows that positive social behavior is one of the greatest predictors of academic success, and we are here to maximize it!
How Your Child Experiences SEL Daily
Your child is known by name at SCVi. We greet each TK-12th grader every morning and meet them where they are academically and socially. Through our program featuring The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Advisory sessions (Morning Meeting for TK-5), and our Love and Logic classroom management approach, your child develops emotional intelligence, conflict resolution skills, and confidence in a safe, supportive environment.
Our project-based learning naturally incorporates collaboration and problem-solving, while our open environment encourages staff to check in regularly. If your child faces challenges, our entire team is ready to help.
And don’t forget play. It’s so important! Research demonstrates that play is essential for the development of physical skills, cognitive development, and social-emotional growth. Our learners thrive on a play-based curriculum complete with a high-quality arts program where imaginations can soar. Learners can create and dismantle, explore, problem-solve, take self-regulated risks, build community, feel accomplishment, support and help others, and grow to become independent and self-reliant. We strive for our learners to learn more about themselves and others in the widest scope possible.
