At SCVi’s Upper School, we focus on the whole child. The foundation of our Upper School curriculum is centered on project-based and social-emotional learning principles. Project-based learning is a revolutionary method of instruction that demands collaboration, teamwork, and problem-solving of our 21st-century learners. Students tackle deeply engaging projects about real-world issues that require critical thought, inquiry, and synthesis. The projects culminate in Presentations of Learning (POLs) to their peers, facilitators, and parents. Our curriculum also features a strong social-emotional learning component that cultivates confidence, leadership, and self-reflection.

We designed our Upper School program around the expectation that 21st-century learners will become entrepreneurs, leaders, and game changers. We consider ourselves a small “liberal arts high school” with a look and feel similar to a small liberal arts college. We challenge the status quo and address difficult questions. Our Upper School community benefits from a dedicated full-time college counselor, and many of our graduates have expressed that their transition to college was seamless.

Core academic courses for 9th-12th graders are A-G approved, the standard required for entrance to the University of California and California State University systems. SCVi is proud to be designated an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Our rigorous IB curriculum prepares learners to become active, thoughtful, and knowledgeable global citizens. In addition, some colleges accept IB classes for college credits. For more information, view our IB program page.

Our open-campus concept instills a strong sense of responsibility in our learners and fosters development of life skills crucial to their success, both personally and professionally, after graduation. And our small campus creates a sense of community that allows creativity to thrive.

In addition to our site-based program, we also offer SCVi Exploration (home study).

Our strong connections to corporate, civic, arts, and STEAM organizations throughout the greater Los Angeles area give our learners access to an array of internship opportunities. We are part of the Omega League for the California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body for high school athletics in Southern California.

The end result? When our learners graduate, they are not only ready for college; they are ready to thoughtfully participate in and contribute to our global economy. SCVi’s Upper School learners leave our school free to think and inspired to lead.
