Design Tech Courses

Business and Entrepreneurship

This semester-long course will allow learners to work collaboratively on a single business venture. The group will decide upon the venture itself, with individual tasks being assigned throughout the semester. The goal of the venture is to create a product or service that will be marketed and sold for real money, with an attempt at maximizing profitability. The learners will handle all aspects of the venture, as well as deciding what to do with any profits. This course is designed for those that have an interest in business, entrepreneurship, and/or marketing.

KHTS Radio Magic
Teacher: TBD

This class is a dynamic and fun opportunity for learners to gain first-hand experience writing, producing, and hosting a live multi-media program. While there will be some outside of class time required, you will be spending that time working with industry professionals at KHTS gaining knowledge of the latest multi-media equipment and methods. You will practice your presentation skills by interviewing local and national leaders live on air, and have the opportunity to share your story with viewers and listeners from around the globe. Learners also will have the opportunity to intern at KHTS, which could be used for required internship hours. No experience necessary – just a curiosity for all things media.

Yearbook

Learners will gain skills in one or more of the following areas: page design, advanced publishing techniques, copy writing, editing and photography while producing a creative, innovative yearbook which records school memories and events. Participants gain useful, real world skills in time management, marketing, teamwork, and design principles

Speech and Debate
Teacher: TBD

This course is designed to develop each learner’s ability to communicate effectively in his or her academic, business, and social life. Learners study seventeen separate public speaking competitive events, including interpretation (which involves dramatic and comedic acting), platform (which requires writing and memorizing well-researched issues of social importance), and spontaneous speaking (where competitors deliver speeches with very limited preparation time). Learners who enroll in this course are considered part of our Speech team, and should be willing to spend some Saturdays and/or Sundays

Introduction to Dance

This course is mostly for beginners and will introduce learners to the basics of dance and movement. We will spend time exploring dance moves and styles as requested by the learners and will take turns performing for our peers. This course is for those looking to gain a solid foundation in dance.

Entertainment Production
Teacher: TBD

Learn technical skills in the theater and assist in the operation of lighting and sound for various on campus events. In this class you will also play a vital role in planning and producing the annual Winter Show.

Advanced Music Ensemble
Teacher: TBD

Learners will develop proper vocal technique, musicianship skills, and performance etiquette while singing choral repertoire from various time periods, cultures, and locations in an ensemble context. These skills will be acquired through music theory application, daily ear training and sight singing practice, as well as mandatory performances, which will occur both in the school venue and at various locations within the Santa Clarita Valley community.

Garageband

Garageband class is a small ensemble course of instruction for musicians who wish to experience all the facets of playing, rehearsing and performing with a real band.  Each band consists of three or more musicians.  The typical lineup of a band is rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass and drums with someone in the band also covering vocals.  Occasionally a true dedicated vocalist is used as well.  Other instruments can be added to any band, players on all instruments are welcome to participate in rock band class.  Keyboard players, fiddle players, pedal steel guitarists and auxiliary percussion and other players are also welcome. Garageband will include some facets of audio and visual production as part of the curriculum.

*Anyone can participate in a band as long as they have minimal skills on their instrument.  If you are interested in this activity but do not have any musical training, you should consider a month or two of lessons on your instrument before taking garageband.

SCVi Film and TV Studio

Learners will create short films and content for iLEAD TV, SCVi’s own Youtube channel. This hands-on process will include writing, directing, acting, editing, cinematography and more.

Choir
Teacher: TBD

Choir will be a mix between choir and dance. Learners do not have to have previous experience in order to join! Every class will start out with body and vocal warm ups. Learners will walk away with a basic knowledge of how to read music and build upon their abilities throughout the semester.

Theory of Knowledge

The interdisciplinary theory of knowledge course is designed to develop a coherent approach to learning that transcends and unifies the academic areas and encourages appreciation of other cultural perspectives. The theory of knowledge course is in part intended to encourage students to reflect on the huge cultural shifts worldwide around the digital revolution and the information economy. The extent and impact of the changes vary greatly in different parts of the world, but everywhere their implications for knowledge are profound. Theory of knowledge encourages critical thinking about knowledge itself and aims to help young people make sense of what they encounter.

Physical Education

Learners will explore various aspects of physical education, while satisfying physical education requirements. Instructor: Unknown

Creative Writing
Teacher: TBD

Whether it’s a screenplay, short story or musical everyone has a story to tell. This hands-on class takes learners from inspiration to page to finished work. Class wraps with a presentation of completed projects. Discover writing: plays, novels, movies – the only limit is your imagination. Thru games, prompts and lots of fun writing exercises you will explore the world of creative writing. Learners will walk away from this class with work they can submit to publishers.

Crime and Justice

This course provides instruction for learners who are interested in careers related to law and law enforcement and for those who want a better understanding of how the criminal justice system works. By examining current events, hot topics in the criminal justice system today such as cybercrime, and taking on the role of a criminal justice professional in a mock trial, learners will explore the principles on which our legal system was developed, structure and procedure of the court system, the juvenile justice system, and reform movements of the American criminal justice system.

Scene Shop (Set and Prop Building)

This course will touch on 3D design and implementation of sets for upcoming shows and events at SCVi. Learners will be creating foam sculptures, working with plastering, scenic painting and more. Learners will also be able to assist finishing set pieces for the K1 classroom. This course is for anyone interested in pursuing a career in set design and/or prop building.
