Go Green This Earth Week: Recycling Competition at SCVi April 21-25

Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22, 2025, and we’re celebrating Earth Week at SCVi! Go green at home and school!

Recycling

This Earth Week, let’s bring our green efforts home! We encourage all learners and families to recycle paper, plastic bottles, and cans. Consider composting food scraps too – it cuts landfill waste and enriches your garden. To celebrate at SCVi, we’re having a recycling competition among homerooms April 21-25 for paper, plastic bottles, and cans. Remember, focus on reducing classroom waste; please don’t bring extra recycling from home.

At the end of the week, the homerooms with the most recycling will each receive a beautiful succulent to proudly display in their classroom – a living reminder of our commitment to a greener future!

Practical Ways to Live More Sustainably

Go green, literally!

  • Composting can reduce your household waste by up to 30 percent.
  • Growing a few herbs or vegetables at home provides fresh produce and reduces your carbon footprint.
  • Spending time around plants can reduce stress and improve focus.

Impact of Recycling

  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours!
  • Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, and the energy to power the average American home for 6 months.
  • Food waste is the largest component of landfills (24 percent). When it decomposes, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than carbon dioxide.
