Let’s Do It: Project-Based Learning = Real World Problem-Solving

What if school felt less like memorizing facts and more like solving real problems that matter? At Santa Clarita Valley International School (SCVi), a tuition-free public charter school in Castaic, that’s not a vision for the future, it’s what happens every day.
With project-based learning (PBL) our learners ask big questions, collaborate, get creative, test ideas, and present their findings to real audiences. From Transitional Kindergarten all the way through 12th grade, we offer education that mirrors the way the world actually works.
In the Lower School
Hands-on, joyful, and academically rich, PBL in our Lower School brings learning to life. Here are just a few of the projects we do:
Kite Project: Learners explore wind and motion by designing, building, and testing their own kites — then revising based on what works.
Butterfly Project: Science, literacy, and social-emotional learning woven into one experience as learners observe life cycles up close.
Holidays Around the World: Learners “travel” globally through storytelling, art, and hands-on creation, building cultural empathy and collaboration skills.
Feathered Friends: Learners research bird habitats, through science, engineering, literacy, and art and then engineer nests. Through this project, learners practice asking questions, testing ideas, revising designs, and communicating their learning, while developing a deeper understanding of how structure and function work in nature.
In Our Spanish Dual Immersion Program
PBL takes on a global dimension in our Spanish Dual Immersion classrooms. Learners research Spanish-speaking countries and present through interactive notebooks and Presentations of Learning. They build piñatas, participate in performing arts celebrations, and collaborate on community projects — all while deepening language fluency alongside creativity and confidence.
In Middle School
Projects grow more complex and self-directed as learners move through 6th, 7th, and 8th grade:
6th Grade: Learners explore the science behind hot air balloons, including thermal energy, engineering design, and weather patterns.
7th Grade: Learners design and launch rockets while conducting real experiments.
8th Grade: In one of SCVi’s most iconic experiences, learners study the principles of flight and then fly an actual glider through our Soaring Aeronautics project.
DreamUp to Space — Learners develop scientific proposals to study microgravity. The best are launched to the International Space Station — and returned to campus for analysis.
In the Upper School
The 10th Grade Personal Project is PBL at its most meaningful. Learners choose a passion, develop a year-long self-directed project, and present their findings to a panel. Projects range from rebuilding a car engine to getting a bench placed in a local park — and SCVi helps connect learners with mentors along the way. The procrastination, the setbacks, the breakthroughs — it all becomes part of the lesson.
Upper School learners also tackle aerospace challenges in a culmination of our TK-12 Aerospace Pathway, research career-connected projects, and solve real-world problems that bridge classroom learning with the industries shaping our future.
Where It All Leads
Every project — big or small — builds toward a Presentation of Learning (POL), where learners share their work with peers, facilitators, families, and community partners. Not just a school assignment. A rehearsal for life.
And the skills developed through years of PBL — critical thinking, self-direction, confident communication — are exactly what make SCVi learners ready for college or a career from day one. It’s no coincidence that our College Connect dual enrollment program, where learners earn real college credits right on campus, is a natural next step for students who’ve spent years thinking independently and tackling meaningful work.
