Lower School

At SCVi’s Lower School, we focus on the whole child through creative, consistent application of project-based and social-emotional learning principles. 1. Personalized Learning

From the very beginning, every learner at SCVi is given an individualized learning plan. Our learners set academic and social and emotional learning (SEL) goals for themselves with the help of their facilitator (teacher). Facilitators stay with learners for two years at a time to foster a strong relationship together. This multiage learning approach means that learners can set their own pace, racing ahead when they master something, and taking time to sit with some ideas that need reinforcing. 

Not only that, but because we are a small school, every learner is known by name and has support from their facilitator, paraprofessionals, counselors, and administrators. This familiarity builds confidence, as students feel comfortable and supported. 

2. Dual Immersion

At SCVi, we strive to be globally connected and part of this commitment is offering Spanish dual immersion to our K-5th graders. We bring teachers from Spain and Mexico to live in our community and share their culture and language with our learners. Our SCVi learners spend 50% of their time learning in Spanish with these native speakers and 50% of their time with English-speaking teachers. 

Our learners share the same curriculum and project-based opportunities as their peers and have exposure to the same state standards while receiving instruction in both languages. The Spanish-speaking and English-speaking teachers collaborate on teaching all subject material. Immersion not a great fit for your child? No problem. We have a non-immersion track as well.

3. Arts Integration

At our tuition-free school, we feel arts are essential, especially for our youngest learners. We incorporate an arts curriculum into our project-based learning so our learners can expect to  be engaged in the arts throughout their day and in a variety of ways (Chalk! Paint! Music! Video/Media!). Our first and second graders recently created their own Farmer’s Market and, yep, you bet they used art to express what they were selling!

Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, our focus on aviation and aerospace learning will be given a boost with a new career-connected learning pathway. We can’t wait to further bring STEAM to life through immersive, hands-on projects for all grade levels. 

 

Leading this program is Mr. Justin Albright! Already involved in the iLEAD community, Mr. Justin is excited to join SCVi and learn all about us. Read on to learn about him and our new program.

 

Please tell us about your background and how you came to be at SCVi.

I have been in education for the past seven years all of which I have spent within the iLEAD network, supporting learners in subjects such as geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and physics. I recently obtained my BS in astronomical and planetary sciences from Arizona State University. I plan on beginning  a MS in space systems engineering this upcoming fall at the University of New Mexico. I also used to work at Virgin Galactic as a material handler, which gave me the opportunity to work on spaceships! I heard about the opening here at SCVi in the aerospace program and felt I was the ideal candidate The program, although new, is going to be a very fun and modern way of learning that I feel is not like anything currently at SCVi. I am very proud of this program, and I am putting my all into creating this. I would recommend any learner to join who is even somewhat curious about aerospace/aviation.

What’s the best part about your role at SCVi? What’s the biggest challenge?

The best part about my role is that I am able to handcraft this program from the ground up. The sky is the limit, and I have huge ambitions of what this will look like in the future. This, in turn, is also one of the challenges. Creating something new does seem daunting, but I have a great team behind me to offer assistance whenever needed.

There are great social-emotional learning activities at SCVi. What’s something you like to practice?

Habit #7, Sharpen the Saw, is my favorite habit (in the Leader in Me program’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People that we use at SCVi), and I personally use this philosophy. Having time to step back and to recharge after a strenuous work week is crucial to prevent midyear burnout. I like to spend time on the weekend to relax and enjoy my time off in order to put my best foot forward the following Monday.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?

In high school I had a teacher named Ms. Kent, and she was always very nice to me and saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself at the time. She has helped me out so much in my personal and professional life, and I am very grateful!

In your opinion, what makes a great leader? How do you teach leadership?

A great leader is someone who can acknowledge their faults and look past one’s self-interests in order to reach a collective common goal.

Five fun fast facts about Mr. Justin:

  1. I love playing video games, preferably fighting games. When I have time, I compete across the country in Super Smash Bros. Melee! Thanks to this game, I have had the opportunity to travel to thirteen different states and two different countries!
  2. I just recently picked up playing tennis. The game is very fast-paced and exciting. Although I am an amateur, I look forward to getting better later down the road.
  3. I enjoy reading books about philosophy. Even if I don’t have the time to sit down and read, I love listening to audiobooks during car rides.
  4. I don’t know how to swim.
  5. My favorite type of music is hip-hop/rap. I listen to a wide range of artists from the ’80s to present.

For our TK-12th grade students — who are in a period of rapid social growth and change — SCVi uses the Leader in Me’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People education series to support student development. The 7 Habits promote engagement, belonging, and well-being.

What Path Will You Take at SCVi? 

Our small, tuition-free public school has a very intentional approach to 21st-century education. Learners are active participants in their learning process and are able to connect ideas and concepts together in practice. What kind of participation? How about…

Senior Living

By the time you’re a senior at our small TK-12 grade school, you are prepared with a wealth of project-based learning, rigorous academics, leadership skills, and social confidence. Sometimes it’s easy to overlook just how far you’ve come and that’s part of the reason we have our Senior Portfolio presentation. During this culmination of their academic career, seniors present to a panel a reflection of what they’re learned during their time at SCVi and why they should graduate from high school. The panel of adults includes staff, parents, and community members. It is a great way for our seniors to end their high school career before heading out into the world.

Could this seem overwhelming? Maybe, if learners didn’t have exposure giving presentations regularly like they do at SCVi. With our focus on PBL, the emphasis is on the process, not necessarily the project. Learners have practice succeeding, failing, learning from both and moving ahead. As part of the PBL process, learners create and share Presentations of Learning (POL). The POL showcases their achievement and growth through the completion of the project. At the end of every year we also hold Showcases of Learning where learners (and their facilitators!) reflect on their achievements and growth toward goals they set at the beginning of school. 

Senior VIP Citizens

We are serious about preparing you for your future at SCVi. Our modern approach to education prepares you from day one whether you start here in kindergarten or in high school. In high school, our dedicated counselor helps you navigate your college and career choices, led by this approach: “How can I make a choice that is the ‘right fit’ for my passions and future?” There is no one-size-fits-all at our innovative school!

FAFSA
FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. We recommend that ALL graduating seniors and their families complete the FAFSA. Whether you think you qualify or not for federal aid, many colleges, universities, and organizations use the information from your FAFSA to determine whether you receive an award from them. You can start your application beginning October 1, and we encourage you to apply early. Some awards are given on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you wait, you may miss an opportunity. The FAFSA website is comprehensive, and if you need help, you can talk to someone “live” while online. Apply online at fafsa.ed.gov.

CalGrants
CalGrants are funded by the State of California for students who will attend a qualifying California college (includes College of the Canyons), university or career or technical school. At iLEAD Schools, we maintain a unique emphasis on using methods that foster our learners’ social-emotional learning and personal strengths. We are committed to ensuring our students learn to lead, be self-directed, and develop their emotional IQ in a way that inspires creativity and engagement in their coursework. We believe it’s vital to help students develop skills like social awareness, self-management, regulation of emotions, and self-awareness early so they can begin to weave these abilities through every facet of their lives.
 
As an integral part of our approach to teaching, implementation and evaluation of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) principles is inseparable from our project-based learning model, which requires learners to research, collaborate, and carefully weigh information and evidence in a nuanced problem-solving context and teaches them to accept feedback, create solutions, and present their findings in a high-performance context.
 
To accomplish this vital mission, we measure and report SEL progress as part of every project, individualized learning plan goal, and Report of Progress. We have also developed SEL and academic rigor rubrics that add a well-balanced approach to academics and reflective practice for facilitators, learners, parents, and administrators. Other elements of our SEL implementation, practice, and assessment include Learner-Led Conferences (LLCs), Presentations of Learning (POLs), Passion Projects, Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs), Advisory Program, learner-driven ambassador groups, Morning Meetings, and restorative approaches to discipline, among others.
 
What is the value of Social-Emotional Learning?
In the article “Reconsidering Rigor in Schools,” Dr. Thom Markham writes: “There is a momentous, broad-based cultural shift underway that has struck at the roots of every industrialized system of education. The result is a demand for more personalized learning, brain-friendly environments, less recall, and more thoughtful application of knowledge, optimal conditions for eliciting intelligent behaviors, constructivist tools, and respectful, caring relationships that honor the learner.”
 
To adapt to an increasingly globalized economy, education must emphasize more than instilling rote knowledge. Students must be prepared to be empathetic, critical thinkers who thoughtfully and significantly engage with the world around them. We know that modern employers prize these skills in the workplace, and research suggests that employees with more highly developed social-emotional strengths earn more and are more productive. And according to the nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank Economic Policy Institute, focusing on non-cognitive skills may actually further improve reading, writing, and mathematics performance in kids.
 
All this work continues at iLEAD. When we started SCVi, our first iLEAD school, we laid the foundation of our program on the concept of nurturing the whole child by blending academic rigor with meaningful engagement, sustained inquiry, and social-emotional learning principles. As our schools grew, we remained committed to weaving opportunities to develop a strong social-emotional foundation into our everyday curriculum. We’ve worked with the International Baccalaureate (IB) program’s global headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, to develop programs aimed at launching social-emotional initiatives across the globe, and we’re also part of a pilot program aimed at integrating compassion into education, which was created by a consortium of professionals from IB, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Pennsylvania State University, among others.

We’re excited to announce the SCVi School Spirit T-Shirt Design Contest! Using their own work created in any medium, all SCVi learners are invited to create a design that shows us how our school makes them feel “Free to Think. Inspired to Lead” (iLEAD Mission Statement). Three contest winners will be chosen, one from each of the Lower, Middle, and Upper School submissions. The artists with the winning designs will each receive a T-shirt featuring their own artwork, a $20 gift card, and a gift bag! But wait – there’s more! The winning designs will also be featured at SCVi’s upcoming art show!

Submissions are due by Friday, April 12, which means learners can work on their designs over spring break. We can’t wait to see what inspires them!

Our tuition-free school believes having learners set their own pace is an essential part of their inspired education. Each and every one of our learners has an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) to personalize their education and instruction. 

We believe that learning should be interest-driven and self-directed. Learners develop an ability to set goals, monitor their own progress, and reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement. Our Learner-Led Conferences (LLCs) include a Report of Progress that contains a narrative of a learner’s development, both academically and socially.

High School: Pace Yourself

High school at SCVi is so exciting because of your options and the pace you set. 

Have you heard of our International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IB CP)? The IB CP allows learners to participate in a career-related curriculum while at the same time providing access to an IB education. The aim of the IB CP is to provide learners with both an academic and practical foundation to support their future goals whether you decide to continue on to higher education or enter the workforce. Learners participate in the IB Career-related Programme during junior and senior years. 

Or you could choose one of our career-connected learning paths. Did you know that in addition to a two-year-long performing arts path, new this year we are offering an Aerospace Career-Connected Learning Pathway?

Hard to know what to choose? Every 9th grader takes a special course called Freshman Seminar. In this course, learners hone key academic skills to be successful in high school and college, explore their aptitudes as they relate to careers, and experience each career-connected learning pathway at SCVi firsthand.

In addition, SCVi offers free dual enrollment through College of the Canyons so you can get college credit early and also see what college is all about.

Set Your Pace with These Essential Educational Tools  

As you set your educational learning pace, here is what you can expect for all learners, whatever their style, at our WASC-accredited school:

  • Project-based learning! PBL is truly at the core of all we do. We love it because it promotes collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving in an exciting and engaging way.
  • Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is essentially building positive social character by supporting a learner’s development of emotional intelligence, life skills, and community engagement. SCVi integrates SEL directly into the curriculum. We use the Leader in Me’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People education series to promote engagement, belonging, and well-being.
  • Arts integration into our projects. We love using the arts as a way to express our creativity! Whether through dance, music, theatre, media, or visual methods, the arts are often viewed as the thread connecting multiple subject areas and are an invaluable part of the PBL process.
  • Advisory (Morning Meeting for grades TK-5) where learners and facilitators have an intentional time to focus on making connections, learning conflict resolution and exploring problem-solving ideas.

What do goats, pollinators, and Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School students all have in common? They all do their part to help make the Earth a better place. At our tuition-free TK-12th grade public school in Castaic, California, the Upper School Ambassadors program recently hosted an Earth Day Celebration event, inviting the younger students and community to honor our precious home. 

It Takes a Community to Make Events Happen

SCVi’s Earth Day celebration was an idea from the Scarlet Foundation, a parent volunteer organization that supports SCVi through fundraising efforts. Not only does the Scarlet Foundation raise money for our small school, but it’s a way parents and caregivers can partner with administrators, facilitators, and families to facilitate programs, events, and activities that bring our community together.

Parents and teachers like Jessica Harrison, SCVi math teacher and director of activities, worked together with the help of SCVi’s Ambassadors program. This group of learners in grades 6-12 wanted to involve the lower grades in a meaningful way. They organized interactive booths so younger learners could collaborate with the older students in an engaging way that would make the most impactful impression.

Giving back to the community in such a big event as this Earth Day Celebration couldn’t happen without the planning and enthusiasm of our ambassadors, and we are so grateful for the hard work they put in to make this day so special.

Every Day Is Earth Day…and Project-Based Learning at SCVi

Did we have projects and hands-on learning at our celebration? You bet we did! At SCVi, we thrive on project-based learning and integrate it into our inquiry-based, play-centered learning.

SCVi emphasizes inquiry-based, self-directed, and play-centered learning in a welcoming community. We nurture imaginations, encourage big questions, and promote risk-taking in a safe and supportive school.

At one booth you could add a vegetable seed (of your choice!) to a little pot of dirt and take it home to watch it grow. At another, you could make your own animal lunch bag.

The biggest projects were the booths themselves. Upper School students created informational posters about bees and pollinators to share. Another booth set up an animal-cleaning station where you could scrub (plastic) animals in a soapy solution to get rid of oil that they had encountered in a (vegetable) oil spill. 

One of the biggest projects was bringing in Dustry and Frankie, two baby goats belonging to junior Madi F. Goats can be used to clear brush, which is especially beneficial for fire prevention. At the event, students and the community fed Dustry and Frankie hay and got in some quick pets too.

Can’t Spell Earth without Art

At our small public school, we love incorporating the arts into our projects and learning. We view arts education as an integral part of developing the whole child. The Earth Day event was no exception.

  • An “Earth Day Garden” banner was created for the students and staff of the school to later enjoy in the hallway. Students dipped their hands in paint and then pressed them on the banner to create hand flower bouquets.  
  • The SCVi Middle School Student Council featured a recycled art booth where you could make a butterfly out of a toilet paper roll and scraps of colorful paper. 
  • The booths were decorated and the students at the photo booth even made their own costumes and dressed up as a satyr (complete with horns, green hair, and furry legs) and a red-and-white mushroom!

The Theatre Department at SCVi has always been a program that learners, staff and families have been proud of. It is our pleasure to introduce you to Mrs. Amy Ciceri, who will be joining the upper school team in the 2024-25 school year in her new role as SCVi Performing Arts Lead.

Mrs. Ciceri is no stranger to SCVi. In fact, some of the lower school families may already be familiar with ‘Miss Amy’ in her role as 1st & 2nd grade facilitator. In addition to her passion for learner-led, project-based learning, Mrs. Ciceri brings with her over 10 years of high school education experience, teaching musical theater, drama, vocal music, piano, music theory, stagecraft, and also serving as ASB Adviser/ Activities Director.  Mrs. Ciceri holds a multiple subject credential, a single-subject credential in music, as well as a CTE (career-technical education) credential in arts, media, and entertainment. 

Mrs. Ciceri’s professional experience is diverse, ranging in the industries of entertainment, hospitality, and education. Over the years, time and time again, Ms. Ciceri realized that working with people of all ages in creative and collaborative settings is her passion. While obtaining her degree from Chapman University in Social Science and a credential from La Verne, she also worked four consecutive years as a one-on-one aide for a child with autism in an inclusive general education setting. Her love for music, and background as a singer-songwriter and performer, adds an artistic quality to her work as an educator. 

When asked what she is looking forward to in her new role leading the SCVi Performing Arts Department, she said, “Throughout the process of making art, there will be surprises every day that none of us expect. Life is often preparing us to expect the unexpected and understand the impact we can make as thoughtful individuals when we show up in a space where everyone feels seen and heard. Together as learners, we start to discover the pattern of simple gifts, and how these small things can mean so much and add up to everything. When we are encouraged to document and share our own reflection process in creative and authentic ways, we feel empowered, with a sense of increased confidence to contribute to something bigger than us that looks and feels deeply valuable. Throughout my own teaching experiences, I’ve observed how effective ‘playful learning’ strategies can be in forming a supportive classroom culture that allows our authentic inner voice to strengthen and explore a range of different ways to freely express ourselves and grow as compassionate communicators.  I love to facilitate inquiry-based lessons designed to increase skill abilities, collaboration, meaningful connections, and understanding between learners.  The various performance projects we will be producing will give our audiences the chance to relate and share in the growth experience. Also, I’m really looking forward to exploring fun opportunities for the learners in SCVi’s upper school performing arts program to work together with the learners in the lower school–to inspire each other through the power of music and performing arts.  The access to cross-collaboration across grade levels is something very special about SCVi.”

What is CTE?

Career Technical Education is a program that integrates high school classes, community connections, work-based learning, and postsecondary planning and training. The goal of CTE is to support learners on their path to high-wage, high skill, in-demand careers in established and emerging industries. CTE is not your mom-and-pop woodshop course. CTE programs connect learners with the skills, mind-set, and knowledge base needed for college and high-demand careers. CTE is personalized. Learners choose their industry sector and the pathway that best aligns with their interests and passions, ensuring the experience is meaningful and relevant to each learner’s goals.

How Does CTE Work?

There are 15 high-demand industry sectors and multiple career pathways within each industry sector. Learners will sign up for a career pathway their freshman or sophomore year of high school and take three years of coursework within that pathway, in addition to relevant internship and work-based learning, student associations and clubs, career and college exploration and preparation, and industry certifications. Learners who complete all three years of coursework receive an additional certificate of completion, recognition at graduation, and postgraduation support. Many CTE courses also count toward the school’s graduation requirements and UC/CSU admissions requirements.

Is CTE just for high school?

Learners experience different industry sectors and career pathways through their projects in 7th and 8th grade. These feeder experiences, or exploratory workshops, allow learners to enter a career pathway in high school with prior experience and confidence in their interest in that pathway. Experiences such as the Glider Project, Entrepreneurship Fairs or Shark Tank projects, Coding and Game Design, school gardening and agriculture, theatre, and photography all have the potential to inspire a learner to work toward that profession through a CTE pathway.

How Is CTE different at SCVi?

Career and Technical education courses are true practice for the project-based real world. Learners use the same principles of iLEAD’s project-based learning model to apply skills and knowledge to real-world problems as they relate to the industry sector of their pathway. This mimics the workplace, gives learners voice and choice, and makes the learning meaningful and fun. Learners step into professional roles, learn work-related skills, and acquire new knowledge through projects that demonstrate necessary competencies for success.

SCVi Career Connected Learning 2024-2025

SCVi’s Career-Connected Learning (CCL) Builds the Leaders of Tomorrow

SCVi offers personalized learning for every student with the intention of allowing each child to follow their passions, hone their skills, and prepare them for as many opportunities as possible postgraduation. What you may know as Career Technical Education, or CTE, at traditional districts is called Career-Connected Learning (CCL) here, because we go so much further than the old-school CTE program.

Here’s how we do that:

Every freshman takes a special course called Freshman Seminar. In this course, learners hone key academic skills to be successful in high school and college, explore their aptitudes as they relate to careers, and experiences each career connected learning pathway at SCVi for hands-on experience.

Sophomores then jump into their path, choosing at least one CCL path at SCVi. We have several paths to choose from:

  •  Aerospace (3 years of study)
  • Performing Arts (2 years of study)

Our CCL pathways help learners in the following ways:

  • Provide a reason to come to school. This is where children love to be, which helps them find success in their overall high school experience.
  • Provides a portfolio that will help with college admissions and job interviews post-high school.
  • Gives opportunities for work-based learning and internship in high school with the industries’ leading experts. We have partnerships with top-level aerospace and arts experts.
  • Provides industry-recognized certifications (like Google Python and Drone Pilot License) right in high school. This guarantees that they are employable after graduation and builds confidence to continue learning.

Our advanced learners may also participate in the esteemed and globally recognized International Baccalaureate Programme, which provides opportunities for 5.0 GPA courses, college credits, and an IB Career Pathway (IBCP) Certificate at graduation. This helps support college admissions to top schools and provides more challenge in core courses to those learners who seek that.

  1. Immediately upon arrival, check in at the front desk and wear or show volunteer identification for the duration of your work period.
  2. Only use adult bathroom facilities.
  3. Do not exchange contact information with learners for any purpose unless it is required as part of your role as a volunteer, and only do so with facilitator, parental, and admin approval.
  4. Check with a staff member before using equipment for the first time. Do not attempt to correct any equipment malfunction. Call office staff for help.
  5. Report to assigned classroom or workplace promptly.
Do’s
  1. Be confidential: What happens in the classroom stays in the classroom.
  2. Look to the facilitator: The classroom facilitator is in charge of supervision. We are here to help, not lead.
  3. Focus on small groups: We are most effective when we can reach 3-5 learners at a time.
  4. Have a good attitude: Be open to feedback from staff, and have fun!
Dont’s 
  1. Don’t focus on your own learner: It might be easier to work with another class if you think your learner will take all of your attention.
  2. Don’t discipline: SCVi staff members are trained in deescalation. Bring challenging situations to them first.
  3. Don’t use this as a conference: Facilitators can schedule time to meet outside of class hours.
  4. Don’t gather data: Classroom observation can be scheduled another time.

Phones on Campus

As smartphones have become a necessity in our modern life, our learners have been bringing them to school at younger and younger grade levels. We understand our families make this choice so they can communicate with their learners should there be an emergency. Here are a few guidelines:

  • As a society, we use phones for a variety of reasons. We want to support our learners with creating healthy habits with technology.  
  • In grades TK/1-5, we ask that phones are kept in backpacks throughout the school day, including during lunch and break, which are times for the social interaction and physical activity learners need to be successful in school.  
  • Beginning in middle school, and depending on the guidelines of each particular class, your learner may have the privilege to use their phones to do classwork, and during break and lunch, if they use their privilege responsibly.  
  • In Upper School, learners may use their phones for school work. Again, depending on the guidelines of each particular class, your learner may have the privilege to use their phones to do classwork, and during break and lunch, if they use their privilege responsibly.  
  • Should any learner need assistance in using a phone more responsibly, we will do our best to help them by limiting their phone usage, asking that it be turned in at the beginning of class, keeping their phone in a safe place, and/or meeting with the family to create a plan to help the learner use their phone more responsibly.  
  • Finally, families, if you need to contact your learner during class hours, we ask that for younger learners, you contact the front desk, and for middle and upper school learners, you wait until their recess or break. Phone calls and texts in the middle of class distract your learner from being engaged in class.

Online Safety

We live in an age where technology is changing, it seems, minute to minute. Our learners are digital natives; they pick up a device, program or technology with ease and in a matter of moments they are able to navigate and operate it with ease and panache. For some of us who came to this technology later in life, we are digital immigrants; we have to reteach our brain to think differently, and it may take us longer to learn how to operate a program/technology, and/or figure out whether it’s going to be in the best interest of our child.  This is particularly true of internet sites. Sometimes, seemingly innocuous sites geared for our kids may not be all they claim to be.

Roblox Gaming App

One such site that we’ve discovered that our learners may be using is Roblox. At first glance, the site may seem to be what it purports to be — a place where your learner can play games.  The problem with the site is that the gamers can communicate with each other, and not all those playing are the same age as your learner. Predators take advantage of sites like this to groom young people.  Here’s an article to better understand how predators use sites like this.  You may want to check the gaming sites your learner is playing to see if they can be accessed by outside people, and perhaps get an account with your learner and play as well, to better understand the application. Again, if your learner has Roblox, it is not a safe site.

YouTube and Unrated Videos

So, you’ve set your learner’s YouTube account to only play a certain rating video. Your learner loves to watch videos of their favorite cartoon character. Settings, check. Cartoon character you know about and love, check. Safe, right? Not necessarily. Unfortunately, some of your child’s favorite cartoon characters may be well loved by adults, and they may have created “fanfiction” adaptations that may not be G-rated. How would your child get a hold of these types of videos?  If they’re non-rated, your learner may be able to access them. Check your child’s account cache to see if they have, by accident, watched a video that was intended for a more mature audience.

The Pod Challenge

Every generation has some crazy fad that drives the adults crazy. Why would they do something so foolish, and in some cases so dangerous? The latest teen challenge is not only dangerous, it could be deadly. The Tide Pod challenge dares kids to eat a laundry detergent gel pod.  

“The laundry detergent packets pose two potential problems… Children and teens can aspirate on the liquid by inhaling it into their lungs, or they can become ill by ingesting it — experiencing a change in blood pressure and heart rate, losing consciousness or having seizures. . . some may not know they have underlying medical conditions, such as asthma, that could put them at a higher risk for complications.” (Jan. 17, Washington Post)

We try our best to protect our learners from the world. With a world changing as fast as it is, we may need help to ensure their safety, particularly on the internet. Luckily there are online resources to help us. Check out sites like Common Sense Media or Family Zone (a subscription site). Both keep their information up to date to help us keep our children safe. One last note — in all the articles we’ve read about online and phone safety, there is one thing we all can do that works well: Continue to have an open dialogue about their choices and experiences.
