Ways We Build Community: Earth Day Celebration

…inquiry-based, play-centered learning. SCVi emphasizes inquiry-based, self-directed, and play-centered learning in a welcoming community. We nurture imaginations, encourage big questions, and promote risk-taking in a safe and supportive school. At…

What do goats, pollinators, and Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School students all have in common? They all do their part to help make the Earth a better place. At our tuition-free TK-12th grade public school in Castaic, California, the Upper School Ambassadors program recently hosted an Earth Day Celebration event, inviting the younger students and community to honor our precious home.

It Takes a Community to Make Events Happen

SCVi’s Earth Day celebration was an idea from the Scarlet Foundation, a parent volunteer organization that supports SCVi through fundraising efforts. Not only does the Scarlet Foundation raise money for our small school, but it’s a way parents and caregivers can partner with administrators, facilitators, and families to facilitate programs, events, and activities that bring our community together.

Parents and teachers like Jessica Harrison, SCVi math teacher and director of activities, worked together with the help of SCVi’s Ambassadors program. This group of learners in grades 6-12 wanted to involve the lower grades in a meaningful way. They organized interactive booths so younger learners could collaborate with the older students in an engaging way that would make the most impactful impression.

Giving back to the community in such a big event as this Earth Day Celebration couldn’t happen without the planning and enthusiasm of our ambassadors, and we are so grateful for the hard work they put in to make this day so special.

Every Day Is Earth Day…and Project-Based Learning at SCVi

Did we have projects and hands-on learning at our celebration? You bet we did! At SCVi, we thrive on project-based learning and integrate it into our inquiry-based, play-centered learning.

SCVi emphasizes inquiry-based, self-directed, and play-centered learning in a welcoming community. We nurture imaginations, encourage big questions, and promote risk-taking in a safe and supportive school.

At one booth you could add a vegetable seed (of your choice!) to a little pot of dirt and take it home to watch it grow. At another, you could make your own animal lunch bag.

The biggest projects were the booths themselves. Upper School students created informational posters about bees and pollinators to share. Another booth set up an animal-cleaning station where you could scrub (plastic) animals in a soapy solution to get rid of oil that they had encountered in a (vegetable) oil spill.

One of the biggest projects was bringing in Dustry and Frankie, two baby goats belonging to junior Madi F. Goats can be used to clear brush, which is especially beneficial for fire prevention. At the event, students and the community fed Dustry and Frankie hay and got in some quick pets too.

A small child takes their hand away from a Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) school blue banner where they pressed their handprint. A taller person is behind them guiding them.

Can’t Spell Earth without Art

At our small public school, we love incorporating the arts into our projects and learning. We view arts education as an integral part of developing the whole child. The Earth Day event was no exception.

  • An “Earth Day Garden” banner was created for the students and staff of the school to later enjoy in the hallway. Students dipped their hands in paint and then pressed them on the banner to create hand flower bouquets.
  • The SCVi Middle School Student Council featured a recycled art booth where you could make a butterfly out of a toilet paper roll and scraps of colorful paper.
  • The booths were decorated and the students at the photo booth even made their own costumes and dressed up as a satyr (complete with horns, green hair, and furry legs) and a red-and-white mushroom!

The Theatre Department at SCVi has always been a program that learners, staff and families have been proud of. It is our pleasure to introduce you to Mrs. Amy Ciceri, who will be joining the upper school team in the 2024-25 school year in her new role as SCVi Performing Arts Lead.

Mrs. Ciceri is no stranger to SCVi. In fact, some of the lower school families may already be familiar with ‘Miss Amy’ in her role as 1st & 2nd grade facilitator. In addition to her passion for learner-led, project-based learning, Mrs. Ciceri brings with her over 10 years of high school education experience, teaching musical theater, drama, vocal music, piano, music theory, stagecraft, and also serving as ASB Adviser/ Activities Director.  Mrs. Ciceri holds a multiple subject credential, a single-subject credential in music, as well as a CTE (career-technical education) credential in arts, media, and entertainment.

Mrs. Ciceri’s professional experience is diverse, ranging in the industries of entertainment, hospitality, and education. Over the years, time and time again, Ms. Ciceri realized that working with people of all ages in creative and collaborative settings is her passion. While obtaining her degree from Chapman University in Social Science and a credential from La Verne, she also worked four consecutive years as a one-on-one aide for a child with autism in an inclusive general education setting. Her love for music, and background as a singer-songwriter and performer, adds an artistic quality to her work as an educator.

When asked what she is looking forward to in her new role leading the SCVi Performing Arts Department, she said, “Throughout the process of making art, there will be surprises every day that none of us expect. Life is often preparing us to expect the unexpected and understand the impact we can make as thoughtful individuals when we show up in a space where everyone feels seen and heard. Together as learners, we start to discover the pattern of simple gifts, and how these small things can mean so much and add up to everything. When we are encouraged to document and share our own reflection process in creative and authentic ways, we feel empowered, with a sense of increased confidence to contribute to something bigger than us that looks and feels deeply valuable. Throughout my own teaching experiences, I’ve observed how effective ‘playful learning’ strategies can be in forming a supportive classroom culture that allows our authentic inner voice to strengthen and explore a range of different ways to freely express ourselves and grow as compassionate communicators.  I love to facilitate inquiry-based lessons designed to increase skill abilities, collaboration, meaningful connections, and understanding between learners.  The various performance projects we will be producing will give our audiences the chance to relate and share in the growth experience. Also, I’m really looking forward to exploring fun opportunities for the learners in SCVi’s upper school performing arts program to work together with the learners in the lower school–to inspire each other through the power of music and performing arts.  The access to cross-collaboration across grade levels is something very special about SCVi.”

Please join us in welcoming Amy Ciceri to the high school team for 2024-25!

Report of Progress for Your Learner Coming Soon!

…a holistic, comprehensive picture of how our learners are growing as Lifelong Learners, Empathetic Citizens, Authentic Individuals, and Design Thinkers. The Report of Progress (ROP) is a comprehensive document of…

Equipping our learners for success is the cornerstone of iLEAD education. Learners are continually assessed on their progress toward meeting grade-level standards, learner outcomes, and their Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) goals. iLEAD Schools embraces the whole child, focusing on both social-emotional and academic skills. Therefore in lieu of a traditional report card, we share Reports of Progress with our families; a holistic, comprehensive picture of how our learners are growing as Lifelong Learners, Empathetic Citizens, Authentic Individuals, and Design Thinkers. The Report of Progress (ROP) is a comprehensive document of a learner’s strengths, growth, and areas where extra support may be needed. We would like to share some exciting new updates and changes to the ROP process. We have outlined these updates below. We hope the updated reports will better reflect our learners’ growth and measure what we value as a school.

The Report of Progress has three major components: (1) progress, (2) narrative, and (3) learner outcome. Read on to learn more about each.

Part 1: Progress

The first part of the ROP is progress (or grades). This is an overall snapshot of the learner’s progress in the first semester, including concepts, skills, and standards.

How is this done?

Each learner receives a progress descriptor appropriate for their grade level.

Grades are given using the new 1-4 numeric scale. For lower school, this follows the Proficiency Scale. For high school, this follows traditional letter grades.

Please note that the goal for each learner in lower school is to be at a 3, “Applying.” The 3, “Applying,” shows that a learner consistently has a complete understanding of the subject area being graded at semester’s end.

A 4, “Mastering,” is reserved for those learners who show an extended, different, or above-and-beyond understanding and application on multiple occasions and may be working above grade-level standards.

The goal for learners is to have all 3s by the end of the second semester. In the first semester, they will still be working toward demonstrating a complete understanding of the grade-level standards.

iLEAD Proficiency Scale

Part 2: Narrative

The second part of the ROP is the narrative. Each learner will have narratives written by their facilitator/s. It is our hope that these narratives are rewarding for you as parents/guardians, as they provide a clear picture of your child’s progress and educational experience. The narrative progress report recognizes that each child is unique and their development cannot fully be understood or assisted by using a checklist approach.

Part 3: Learner Outcome

The last part of the ROP is the learner outcome. At iLEAD, we believe that education should extend beyond traditional academic knowledge. In the course of a child’s journey with iLEAD Schools, our learners will engage with a relevant and rigorous curriculum that will prepare them for success personally and professionally.

Our purposeful approach revolves around the iLEAD Schoolwide Learner Outcomes, a collective vision that encapsulates our aspirations for each individual’s education. New for the 2023-2024 school year, the following learner outcomes serve as our compass, guiding us in shaping a child’s educational journey.

iLEAD Learner Outcomes

In order to align grading across both the academic and learner outcome scores, the proficiency scale above also applies to the learner outcome rubric. Our goal for learners surrounding the learner outcomes is that by the time they promote/graduate from our school, they are able to consistently and independently apply these skills and knowledge in their personal and professional lives. Because each Learner Outcome is complex in its aspirations, it is important to recognize that progress on the Learner Outcomes may be a little slower, and it may require multiple years to consistently and independently demonstrate complete understanding and/or mastery.

All three components of the first semester ROP will be available for families in the School Pathways Parent Portal. Click here for directions on how to access your Parent Portal. In addition, if your learner has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), then a progress report will also be sent home via email for your review. A hard copy can also be sent home at your request. More details will be coming soon regarding when your ROP will be available for your learner.

Learner Spotlight: Griffin Loch

By Michael Niehoff
Education Content Coordinator, iLEAD Schools

SCVi Exploration’s Griffin Loch is our latest iLEAD Legacy Maker.  The successful young filmmaker is completing his third full-length feature film, A Spark in Nothing. This spring, Loch will graduate from SCVi after having completed all of the high school requirements in only two years.

With limited production staff and funding, Loch writes, directs, edits, and produces each of his films. He even acted in his two feature films, The Adventure of T.P. Man and Flusher and Calling the Shots. “Once I had finished those, I was afforded the opportunity to step behind the camera as a full-time director.”

With his parents’ guidance and support, Loch’s feature films have been fully insured and also permitted by the cities that served as film locations. “My parents were firm from the beginning that if I was going to do this, I had to be as professional as I could,” he said.

Loch also depends on his family and facilitators to be cast and crew. “I knew no one would take a 13-year-old kid seriously, except those who knew me well,” he said.

“Since our crew has primarily consisted of me and my parents, we all do a little of everything,” Loch said. “In fact, I do everything besides make the coffee.”

Loch remembers being interested in movies and filmmaking at a very young age and admiring directors and creatives including Buster Keaton, Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick and Federico Fellini.

“As long as I can remember, I watched films with a director’s eye,” Loch said. “I never got too caught up in whether things were real but rather in how they were made. I wanted to tell stories through this medium.”

Loch is part of the iLEAD Innovation Studios program, which allows learners to incorporate their individual passions into their learning. It is a personalized approach to project-based learning.

Facilitated by Emilie Evenson at iLEAD Innovation Studios, Loch’s personalized education plan has been a perfect fit. “Because this approach allowed me to make films, each subject became deeply important to me. I wanted to learn,” he said. “Taking leadership in my education encouraged me to excel at both school and filmmaking.”

Loch said that SCVi was supportive of his passion right from the start. “My first shorts were screened at the junior high level with all the learners,” Loch said. “To see my film flicker across the faces of every class was intoxicating.”

As he began his filmmaking career, Loch said everything opened up for him through the iLEAD community. “Facilitators and staff I had not even officially met volunteered to act or help on the weekends by chaperoning my shoots. The SCVi grounds were open to me for any filming,” Loch said. “Because of this, you will see several locations in all my films that are on SCVi grounds.”

Both of Loch’s first two films were screened in the SCVi Shakespeare Theater as fundraisers for his film projects. He asked supporters to be extras in his films. Key iLEAD staff are extras in his latest film.

“There has never been a moment of my filmmaking when I have not found encouragement from SCVi,” Loch said.

Loch’s latest film A Spark in Nothing is about a reluctant guardian angel in search of redemption. Loch said the audience will identify with both of the two main characters. He said the villain is not one of the characters but the concept of time.

In addition to initial local screenings, Loch plans to make this film available in digital formats as well as the film festival circuit. “I want as many people as possible to see what we have created,” Loch said. “We are following every specification of quality to apply to platforms like Netflix.”

Loch said his ultimate excitement comes from audience reactions. “I want them to be entertained, moved with emotions,” Loch said. “Perhaps they walk away knowing something more about themselves by seeing my character flaws and trials.”

Loch’s first film, Calling the Shots, placed at the Independent Filmmakers Showcase in Los Angeles. His second, The Adventure of T.P. Man and Flusher, garnered Loch the IFS Best Director Award and a nomination for Best Film and placed at the Indy Film Fest. Loch’s film work has also attracted recognition from the Roundtable Global Youth Awards.

The power of story and emotion attracted Loch to the medium.  “Humans are fascinating. We crave interaction,” he said. “Film allows us to look into the eye, see the souls of others sharing a journey with us. A good film allows you to connect and ask yourself what you would do in that situation.”

Loch credited iLEAD and SCVi for nurturing his vision. “None of this would be possible without the incredible support of my parents and my entire iLEAD-SCVi family.”

After his early graduation from high school, Loch plans to complete his fourth feature film before he turns 18.

Loch said he’s aware the film industry is changing quickly, with Amazon and Netflix contending with movie studios. He’s part of a new generation of filmmakers, some who are making entire films on their smartphones.

“I will absolutely make films for the rest of my life, if possible. This is my passion, my love, my calling,” Loch said. “I will continue to try to create the stories I know I was meant to tell. How these stories will be viewed is still unknown.”

A Spark In Nothing is scheduled to release soon. Loch’s previous films are both available at Amazon Prime. For more information and updates, visit GriffinLoch.com. You can also find him on social media: @GriffinLoch on Twitter, @griffin_loch on Instagram and Griffin Loch on Facebook.

There are many, many ways to shine at Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School, a tuition-free TK-12th grade school in Castaic. Best of all, you don’t have to choose just one. Take Rayleigh Newton. Ray has starred in theatre productions, sent a science project to space, and dunked a teacher or two. We asked Ray and Fabi (mom and Ray’s fellow night-owl) what they love about SCVi.

When did you start at SCVi and what grade is Ray in now?

Fabi: Ray started 4th grade at SCVi and is going into 7th grade now.

Why did you choose to enroll Ray at SCVi?

Fabi: Ray was not comfortable or happy in a traditional school setting.

Who is a strong SCVi influence and why?

Ray: Mr. Call and Ms. Rose were my first facilitators at SCVi. They go above and beyond as teachers. I trust them and they have been strong positive influences in my life. I feel like they truly care about me and my future.

What are some of the events you enjoy at SCVi?

Fabi: We participate and volunteer at just about every event but my favorites are Trunk-or-Treat and Bingetti (spaghetti bingo night).

Ray: Spirit Week and Dunk-A-Teacher event!

What activities are you involved in at SCVi?

Ray: I try out for theatre every year. So far I have been Alice in Alice in Wonderland, Dr. Roberta in Pigsylvania and the Mayor and Queen in Bedtime Stories. I am the treasurer in student council. I am a Principal investigator (PI) of Team Bok Choy for DreamUp to Space and also I manage the Kindness Board. I also love art and Mr. Matt helps me with my submissions to the yearly art contest.

Can you name a favorite project you’ve worked on at SCVi? What made it memorable?

Ray: DreamUp to Space. I had my project launched into space! I got to work with something that’s actually been in space and analyze it in a lab. I got to go to Kennedy Space Center (it was a blast! Get it?) and we attended the awards ceremony with all the other participants, which was fun. It was really rewarding to have my work chosen. I would like to help future astronauts in space missions and also I hope to have a career in NASA when I grow up.

Who would you like to give a “shoutout” to at SCVi? Who has helped you and how?

Fabi: Mr. Call, he has advocated for Ray and my family in so many ways. He’s the best cheerleader and extremely supportive.

Ray: Mr. Kern because he helps me with emotional support and overcoming personal troubles. He is kind and generous.

Can you guess who said what in these fun facts about Ray and Fabi…

  • I know how to sew, I made my own utility belt to keep my tools in, I’ve sewn items for my dolls and made beanbags for hacky sack.
  • I love Greek mythology! I’ve read every book by Rick Riordan and I know an insane amount of facts and trivia about Ancient Greece.
  • I have two dogs. We adopted Sakura two years ago and Pastel last November. I love to go on hikes with them on the trails around Santa Clarita.
  • I am a vegetarian, and my favorite dish is vegetarian sausage. I am learning how to cook recipes from a Harry Potter cookbook I bought at the SCVi Book Fair.

Thank you for sharing more about yourselves, Fabi and Ray. We’re so glad you’re with us at SCVi!

The aim of the IB program is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

IB learners are characterized by striving to meet the nine learning attributes set out by the International Baccalaureate Organization. In all of our IB classes at SCVi, we nurture these qualities in our learners. With the senior mock exams having taken place last week, there has been an inevitable focus on the qualities of being inquiring and knowledgeable. We aim to equip learners with the in-depth knowledge that they need to succeed, but we also aim to nurture learners’ curiosity and to develop their skills for research and independent learning. Our different classes all develop critical and creative thinking skills in order to serve all of our learners in the lifelong learning journey. You can discover more about the IB learner profile on their website, www.ibo.org, and at SCVi’s information morning on Tuesday, April 2nd, at 9 a.m. in the Village.

Senior mock exams have now finished. The facilitators will use these to identify what learners now need to succeed in the May exams. The assessment calendar is available here so that you can track the deadlines for internal assessment.

The schedules and all of the necessary information on exam conduct has been emailed to learners and parents. Please let me know if you need me to send this information again: abbie.neall@scvi-k12.org.

On Thursday, there will be the Spanish oral examination which is recorded and sent to examiners across the globe.

Top 10 Reasons to Choose SCVi

…work together to send a science project to space. Does it get any more globally connected than that? 10. Community is Everything We know our community is our greatest asset….

Santa Clarita Valley International School (SCVi) serves TK-12th grade students from the greater Santa Clarita community at our tuition-free public charter school. All learners receive personalized attention, caring facilitators, and a strong academic environment. Here are ten great reasons why children thrive at our community-centered school:

1. Building a Foundation for a Bright Future

From transitional kindergarten (TK) through 12th grade, SCVi learners engage in high-quality academics and character development aimed at growing the whole child. Our curriculum is authentic and relevant, supports the needs of all learners, and meets or exceeds California Learning Standards. We have dual language immersion (English/Spanish) immersion tracks for learners in grades K-5, STEAM classes, Career Technical Education pathways, and an International Baccalaureate (IB) program in our upper school (see Reason #7)…

2. Small School Personalization

At SCVi, everyone knows your learner’s name and cares about their success. Every learner has an individualized learning plan and support from teachers – known as facilitators – and a care team of counselors, paraprofessionals, and administrators. We get to know each learner as an individual and nurture strengths and areas of improvement. We practice multiage learning so learners can work on skills and concepts according to their abilities. Learners stay with a facilitator for two years at a time and have an advisor for their entire education here.

3. Project-Based Learning

We are passionate about project-based learning (PBL) at SCVi. PBL means learners are active participants in their learning process and are able to connect ideas and concepts together in  hands-on and engaging ways. PBL gives learners real-world skills based on collaboration and autonomy. Learners are encouraged to move at their own pace through inquiry-based learning strategies.

4. Arts are Essential – not “Extra”

At our tuition-free public TK-12 school, we believe arts are an essential part of developing the whole child. Arts are the thread connecting all subjects and are explored not only as a core subject but also as an integral part of our project-based learning. We offer dance, music, and theatre along with visual arts such as painting, photography, and graphic design We share our art with the community at our annual Spring Open House and in local galleries in our region.

5. Physical Fitness & Competitive Athletics

Our physical education program at the TK-5 level helps prepare learners for a lifetime of fitness and movement with weekly classes. Starting in middle school, learners can play co-ed flag football and soccer. Our athletes in 9th-12th grades are encouraged to participate in such sports as volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, and swimming. Our competitive teams participate in the Omega League of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and enjoy all the benefits of district competition with ample playing time thanks to our small size.

Looking at a laptop, two students sit on either side of a teacher at a round table in a classroom with a purple bulletin board, a bookshelf, and a filing cabinet behind them.

6. Social-Emotional Learning

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is at the heart of everything we do at SCVi. Sure, academics are important but we believe it’s vital to help students develop skills like social awareness, self-management, regulation of emotions, and self-awareness early so they can use these ideas as they grow. SEL works in tandem with our PBL learning approach which requires learners to research, collaborate, use a problem-solving approach and create solutions.

7. College & Career Pathways

Shark Tank projects in 8th grade? Why not! Work on a project you create or delve into Coding and Game design if that’s more your passion. Intrigued by flight? Join our Soaring Aeronautics Project and fly a glider! Starting in middle school SCVi offers an introduction to incredible Career Technical Education pathways that learners can choose to pursue in our upper school. Not only that, upper school learners are able to select individual IB (International Baccalaureate) courses, or enroll in a full IB schedule of classes. And take college classes in high school. And meet California’s A-G requirements for college as a given. And work with SCVi’s Academic and College Counselor all along the way. So many options, options, options.

8. Our Values

At our small TK-12 school, we provide a safe space for our learners to grow, take appropriate risks, and gain confidence in themselves. We use the Leader in Me character curriculum which teaches the key concepts found in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Additionally, we host Advisory (Morning Meeting for grades TK-5) where learners and facilitators have an intentional time to focus on making connections, learning conflict resolution and exploring problem-solving ideas.

9. Globally Connected

Why do we have “international” at the end of our name? Because we feel it is crucial to offer culturally diverse programs that expose our learners to the greater world around them, such as dual language immersion, the IB program, science and the arts. Our learners work together to send a science project to space. Does it get any more globally connected than that?

10. Community is Everything

We know our community is our greatest asset. We gratefully lean on our community to go the extra mile for our learners: from an active iSupport and Scarlet Foundation to community events like our annual Spring Open House, we are proud that our families contribute to the well-being of our school. We offer seminars as we navigate the wonders of raising thoughtful and curious leaders. Our community is family.

Making the Most of School: Meet SCVi Alum Paige Guarino

…Haub School of Law at Pace University in New York. Currently I am a transactional attorney, barred to practice in New York and New Jersey. I work as an associate…

A Renaissance Era model built to scale? Young Entrepreneurs programs that teach about real-life permits and licenses? Helping to form the Ambassadors program? Meet Paige Guarino.

During her time at our tuition-free TK-12th grade school, Paige gained a thoughtful awareness of how she learned.  She also had the personalized support of SCVi to guide her both with social interactions (we love learning with others in a team!) and with the academics she wanted to strengthen. Here Paige shares her SCVi experience and what she has been doing since graduation! It’s way cool.

Who was your strongest SCVi influence and/or what’s your best memory of your time at SCVi?

Some of my favorite and most influential memories involve the formation and participation in the Ambassadors program. With reference to staff and facilitators, I cannot limit the impact to one person; I credit Cheryl Sena, Christy Zimmerman, Kim Adam, and Matt Watson all as having an immeasurable impact on my life and development in various ways.

What were some of the events you enjoyed at SCVi?

Most definitely the Arts Festival! Also, the Winter Show and Ambassadors program. Mr. Faulkner and Dustin Lengning started the Renaissance Fair after my time, but I had the opportunity to attend once in high school and thought this was an incredible event.

Were you involved in other activities at SCVi?

I appreciated my experience with the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, the Ambassadors program, serving as a student representative on the board, and the cross country and soccer teams.

Also, I did an after-school program with Malaka Donavan, where we learned about finances and taxes. At the end of the program, we went to this event where we got fake life scenarios, calculated our finances, and did our taxes. Honestly, I still use some of the mnemonic devices when doing my finances to this day. (Paige also recommends The Best One Yet daily financial podcast. No mnemonics required!)

As you know, we’re all about project-based learning at SCVi. What’s a favorite project you worked on here?

For my IB project I tried to get a bus route relocated off of a residential street to the public road behind it (for safety and a few other reasons). While I was ultimately unsuccessful, I learned some valuable lessons about the bureaucratic process and how many various elements and considerations go into the simplest change in, or request for, city plans.

I also did a cross-subject project in the 7th grade between history and math (my teachers were the amazing Mr. Molik and Mr. Pennay) that will always stick out to me. We were tasked with building a 3-D model of a historically significant event during the Renaissance Era, built to scale.

I think the Renaissance Era model has always stuck out to me because (i) this is when I started to learn I could be overly controlling when working in teams and needed to work to reel it in; and (ii) the project inadvertently forced and incentivized me to grapple with and seek help for my weakness in math when I got frustrated that it was affecting my love for history. This has been impactful for me as I consider it a catalyst for a shift in my thinking, really planting the seed for the importance of recognizing my weakness on topics I’m struggling to address independently– to be able to develop personal work-arounds and incentives that help me overcome them.

How did SCVi prepare you for your life today?

I would have to say that SCVi prepared me for the real world by exposing me to it. Instead of learning in a vacuum, we were constantly being asked to consider and/or pursue real-life applications for various skills and knowledge. (Even the young entrepreneur programs taught about requisite licenses and permits.) Therefore, whether cognizant of it or not, we had already faced the types of obstacles and/or at least had a better idea of what obstacles and processes we would likely face after graduation.

Tell us about yourself now.

After high school graduation I attended a small liberal arts school in Maryland by the name of Washington College. I received a bachelor of arts in political science, with a minor in religion and concentration in peace and conflict in 2018.  My theory is you can’t understand a country’s politics or conflicts without understanding its history or culture, which is most often rooted in religion.

After my undergraduate studies, I attended law school and received my JD at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University in New York. Currently I am a transactional attorney, barred to practice in New York and New Jersey. I work as an associate at Armstrong Teasdale, out of our Times Square New York City office.

Thank you, Paige, for sharing your SCVi experience with us – we love hearing from our learners both while they’re here and once they’re gone! Not a student yet? Learn more about our tuition-free school that supports your academic and social growth in a small, committed community. Enrolling now!

If you chose SCVi for all of them, you are correct! Our tuition-free TK-12th grade school in the Santa Clarita Valley acts a lot like a private school but at no cost. Here are some examples of the high quality you can expect at our small, public school:

Inclusive Not Exclusive

We support and care for ALL our learners at SCVi. We know each of our TK-12th graders by name and make sure to greet them every morning as they arrive. We also take the time to meet learners where they are academically and socially and help them grow and learn into their full potential.

At our tuition-free school, we center our curriculum around project-based learning. This collaborative, problem-solving approach means learners work together while learning specific fundamentals. We have space for a huddle, space to research and collaborate, and all the space to get any help needed.

We are a family community at SCVi: all are welcome. We are a small school that loves to make big connections. We love having our families in our school volunteering in the classroom, helping out at events, and/or taking part in one of our seminars.

We love to share what makes our learners shine too, like our Spring Open House, Showcases of Learning and engagements in the surrounding area. Our 10th grade learners engage in a personal project that often gives back to the community, like a learner who helped families experiencing homelessness access items they need. Budding athletes star in sporting events, as our small size means more playing time.

Investing in Our Learners

At SCVi, we are so excited to invest in the best for our learners. We have carefully considered a multitude of educational models and ideas and adapted them to serve our community’s needs. Here are some ways we have gone above and beyond a traditional public school model.

Social Emotional Learning

– Our Leader in Me Program focuses on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People series.

Move the World engages learners with short effective exercises for their age level.

– Learner-Led Conferences (LLCs)

– Advisory Program for upper school and Morning Meetings for lower school

Love and Logic discipline approach

– A Report of Progress that includes a narrative about your child’s development, both academically and socially. We know and cherish your child!

Aerospace Projects

-Every grade has an aerospace project designed for their level, from studying how animals fly to flying a glider yourself to completing an aerospace career technical education pathway.

-In conjunction with aerospace, studying the effects of flight on objects, like this year’s Team Bok Choy, who studied the effects of microgravity on bok choy’s germination on board the International Space Station.

Classroom Design

-SCVi does not have a traditional classroom setup, and that’s on purpose. We want our learners to move around and engage in creativity, curiosity and synergy.

-Open classrooms and multiage learning environments are based on 21st-century ideas around work and collaboration.

Speaking of open spaces, we have room for you: get all the quality and none of the price of a private school education — enroll at SCVi today!

What is a charter school?

Charter schools are FREE public schools overseen by the local school district or county but are free to govern themselves and create their own educational programs. Charter schools are public schools operated independently of the local school board, often with a curriculum and educational philosophy different from the other schools in the system. They are tuition-free, non-religious, and are mandated to teach all. Charter schools create new professional opportunities for teachers, provide parents and pupils expanded choices in the types of educational opportunities available through the public school system, and encourage the use of different and state-of-the-art teaching methods.

Does the school provide transportation?

SCVi has buses available for learners from the San Fernando Valley and Fillmore/Piru areas. For more information, click here.

Does the school have a newsletter?

Yes, we do. We send a weekly Monday Message. Sign up below to receive the newsletters and messages.

Does my child need to bring a laptop or other technology?

Our technology goal is a one-to-one technology-to-learner ratio (one device per student). Learners are welcome to provide a source of technology, such as a laptop or tablet, but it is not required and there are school devices available to every learner.

I heard SCVi is a family participation school. How many volunteer hours are expected?

Volunteering and participation are always optional. We encourage participation in order to foster the home-school connection and work tirelessly to create a culture where families feel welcome to come onto campus often. See the Volunteering page for a list of volunteer opportunities, and watch the Monday Message for current needs.

Does the school have a PTA or other organized parent group?

SCVi is supported by Scarlet Foundation, a parent-and-family-led 501(c)3 nonprofit fundraising organization dedicated to raising money to benefit the learners and classrooms of SCVi. Within Scarlet Foundation are the Scarlet Parent Volunteers, which organizes the volunteering efforts on campus. Scarlet Parent Volunteers hold a General Meeting the first Thursday of each month at 9:00 AM in the Cafe.

Will my child transition or adjust well to your environment?

If your child is transferring from a different educational environment, they may need some time to adjust. Some learners from a traditional environment struggle at first, while others adapt quickly. Many of our seasoned learners step into a leadership role, take their new classmates under their wings, and show them how to be successful at SCVi.

Why multiage?

Research supports environments with two or more grades that allow learners the flexibility to progress at their own pace along a continuum of achievement. As such, select grade levels at SCVi are multiage environments.

I heard you are the “No-Homework School.” Is that true?

When people tour the school and ask learners if they have homework, typically the answer is no. But when they ask learners if they do work at home, the answer is “Of course!”

We don’t give much homework in the typical form, such as packets. Our “homework” is an extension of the projects learners are working on in class. It might look like research, or putting together a model, or refining an essay. Over time, there is more to be done after school hours, as is appropriate for each grade level.

However, we will always value carving out time for kids to be with their families, exercise, and generally have some downtime after their school day is done. That is a natural part of developing the whole child. Research supports this view. To learn more, please see the book list below.

What’s your classroom culture and discipline policy?

Because of our unique approach to deeper learning and our focus on social-emotional learning, we take a different approach to discipline than most schools do. We believe that it is part of our job to facilitate growth in the area of learning self-direction and self-discipline. Social-emotional learning is even included in our Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs), Learner-Led Conferences (LLCs), and Reports of Progress. Each of our learners is different, as are the challenges they face. We have thoroughly researched the best approaches and philosophies to align with our mission. We are not fans of punishments and rewards. We emphasize Love and Logic literature and also recommend the following books.

Since this is a PBL school, I heard you don’t have textbooks. How do you know what to teach?

SCVi follows Common Core state standards in California. SCVi’s highly qualified, credentialed educators participate in extensive training every August before schools starts and throughout the year. SCVi is a pioneer in project-based learning and integrating social-emotional learning into the curriculum. SCVi facilitators create their own syllabi and curriculum based on the state standards. We believe project-based learning is the ideal way to prepare learners for the future, as it mimics the workplace more than any other model. If you would like to find out more about PBL, please see the book list below.

The classroom is very active. Is it hard for learners to concentrate in that environment?

After years of research into cutting-edge office spaces, we have created our environments to prepare our kids for their future, not our past. We believe that kids in quiet rows of desks are a reflection of years past. We have intentionally designed classrooms and created a culture where learners can easily collaborate, rather than working in isolation as the norm. This is a reflection of the companies where they will eventually work or those they will build for themselves as entrepreneurs.

Learners respond to this unique environment in many different ways. Most find it refreshing to finally be able to move around as needed, which results in enhanced concentration and engagement. Others find they prefer less stimuli in order to perform quiet work. Our facilitators do an excellent job of understanding which learners need a quieter work environment and when. They facilitate student choice and make arrangements to use the classroom spaces designed for quiet work when needed. In a project-based setting, more often than not, the active environment is necessary for the collaboration.

For more information about a PBL-designed classroom, please see the book list below.

SCVi Seniors Rule

…the SAT so our learners can take the test in the comfort of our school. Less stress for your best! We teach the A-G college entrance requirement courses at our…

Being a senior in high school is both exhilarating and terrifying. You’re almost free…to direct the rest of your life? See what we mean? Not to worry. At Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School, a tuition-free TK-12th grade public school in Castaic, California, we are here to prepare you for what’s next, pump you up, and celebrate your accomplishments – all year long.

Senior Living

By the time you’re a senior at our small TK-12 grade school, you are prepared with a wealth of project-based learning, rigorous academics, leadership skills, and social confidence. Sometimes it’s easy to overlook just how far you’ve come and that’s part of the reason we have our Senior Portfolio presentation. During this culmination of their academic career, seniors present to a panel a reflection of what they’re learned during their time at SCVi and why they should graduate from high school. The panel of adults includes staff, parents, and community members. It is a great way for our seniors to end their high school career before heading out into the world.

Could this seem overwhelming? Maybe, if learners didn’t have exposure giving presentations regularly like they do at SCVi. With our focus on PBL, the emphasis is on the process, not necessarily the project. Learners have practice succeeding, failing, learning from both and moving ahead. As part of the PBL process, learners create and share Presentations of Learning (POL). The POL showcases their achievement and growth through the completion of the project. At the end of every year we also hold Showcases of Learning where learners (and their facilitators!) reflect on their achievements and growth toward goals they set at the beginning of school.

Senior VIP Citizens

We are serious about preparing you for your future at SCVi. Our modern approach to education prepares you from day one whether you start here in kindergarten or in high school. In high school, our dedicated counselor helps you navigate your college and career choices, led by this approach: “How can I make a choice that is the ‘right fit’ for my passions and future?” There is no one-size-fits-all at our innovative school!

When you’re a senior, we help you fine-tune your choices and make sure you are prepared for what you need, whether that’s searching for scholarships or taking college-prep tests. Our senior advisor even proctors the SAT so our learners can take the test in the comfort of our school. Less stress for your best!

We teach the A-G college entrance requirement courses at our WASC-accredited school so all of our graduates are prepared to enter the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems. You graduate with (free!) college credits given dual enrollment with College of the Canyons to give you a head start to your future.

Not sure if college is in your future? We’re here to help with entrepreneurial, military and other career opportunities too. We offer an International Baccalaureate (IB) Career-Related Programme to provide learners with both an academic and practical foundation to support future goals whether you decide to continue on to higher education or enter the workforce.

And new for the 2024-25 school year is our Aerospace Learning Pathway, which integrates learning about aviation with career opportunities, especially right here in our local community.

Learner Spotlight: SCVi Exploration’s Own Jax Malcolm

…a learner and a community supporter, Jax is also a business owner and innovator. He launched his own clothing company — TRIDENT — in October 2019 at the Gen Z…

Education Content Coordinator, iLEAD Schools

In the professional world, there is often a common means of establishing someone’s presence in any particular field: Google it. That’s right. If you Google someone’s name, you can quickly see if they are an influencer in their chosen area of public professional endeavors. Well, if you Google 16-year-old iLEAD SCVi Exploration learner Jax Malcolm, this holds true.

iLEAD Schools are proud of their learners in so many ways. And it’s especially exciting when learners not only live up to expectations and the mission such as leadership, entrepreneurship, and the arts but surpass them beyond all imagination. Sixteen-year-old iLEAD SCVi Explorer Jax Malcolm has done just that and then some.

Jax, who will be graduating this June one year early, is one busy young man on all fronts of academic, social, cultural and community life. He is an actor, director, writer, business owner, activist, advocate, philanthropist, athlete and YouTuber. And that’s not the complete résumé by any means.

Focused, First & Foremost

After graduation, Jax plans to continue his already successful acting and directing career. He has launched his own business, is deeply involved in his community and always loves to learn.

The Entrepreneur

In addition to being an artist, a learner and a community supporter, Jax is also a business owner and innovator. He launched his own clothing company TRIDENT in October 2019 at the Gen Z Social Summit in Los Angeles.

As a competitive swimmer (Jr. Olympics, varsity), Jax says he named his company Trident after the infamous weapon of Poseidon. “I have always been inspired by water, so this seemed like an appropriate name,” he said.

Catalyst for the Community

Known in Hollywood for performing, Jax is motivated to lend his star power to so many worthwhile causes.

To start, he’s a founding member of Heal the Bay’s Hollywood Ambassador Board. He is a certified speaker for the organization and works at Heal the Bay Aquarium, focusing on their children’s initiatives and clean water legislation.

Jax, who had multiple kidney surgeries in his early months of life and had active kidney care until age five, is also a speaker and ambassador for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. On behalf of the hospital, he hosted an event called DreamNight at the Los Angeles Zoo, has spoken at press conferences and works with corporate donors.

Jax loves animals and works with the Spay Neuter Project Los Angeles. Three years ago, he got involved with them when his family fostered and adopted three kittens who received their lifesaving spay and neuter surgeries through the organization. Now he’s an active member of the organization who volunteers with their kitten nursery project. He’s also just completed a successful campaign for SNPLA on their Instagram account, @snpla. Jax features his own rescue kittens on his Instagram account, @thejaxmalcolm.

Finally, Jax takes his performance background to the Starlight Children’s Foundation by supporting their annual Dream Halloween event. This includes visiting young patients at the hospital and delivering presents, singing telegrams and more. He also hosts an annual star student movie event in partnership with the Vista Theatre and Nerds Like Us to raise money for these organizations.

For many of us, this would be a lifetime or more of service or community-based work. But for Jax, it’s simply what he does.

“I am driven by the need to do good and try to make a positive impact in my community every day,” he said.

Activism, Advocacy

Conservation Invasion is the award-winning educational web series from Jax on YouTube that has 1.83K subscribers. Jax created Conservation Invasion to engage, educate and promote lifelong environmental stewardships to children and their families.

According to Jax, since most people first encounter the natural world of animal and plant life as children, he hosts his web series on location at zoos, aquariums, animal sanctuaries, museums, and children’s educational centers. Jax shoots his series using an iPhone and a GoPro 10 and aims to include an expert interview at each location.

“I really want to bring the experience to the viewer at home,” he said. “Additionally, we aim to spotlight the critical role these institutions play in the fight to save endangered or threatened species and promote the importance of planet conservation.”

When Jax first got connected to Heal the Bay, he was a summer lifeguard at the beach. “I was seeing firsthand the devastation that we are inflicting on our waterways and the animal inhabitants,” he said. “It gave me a platform to make change.”

And now, Jax sees his mission is not only to advocate environmental protection through organizations like Heal the Bay, but to get his peers and others to do the same.

“I really use my speaking engagements and conservation invasion as a way to enact change from those who are interested in joining the cause,” said Jax. “We always include tips to make immediate changes in the world.”

Lifelong Learner, Digital Citizen

Jax says that due to his diverse interests, passions and projects that iLEAD SCVi has been the perfect place for him. “SCVi offers me the flexibility that my schedule demands, as well as the opportunity to pursue educational opportunities through outside sources as well,” he said.

For example, Jax takes online classes through Outschool and develops mentoring networks that support his pursuits in business, entertainment and even manufacturing.

“This would just not work in traditional school,” he said. “Academically, I’m able to tailor my learning experience to my interests and career. I love being able to take classes that help me right now with the work I’m doing.”

It Might Surprise You

Jax acknowledges that most people he meets don’t know he has a learning disability.

“It’s similar to dyslexia,” he said. “When I read, my processing time takes longer than most other learners.”

Learning lines from scripts for his acting work can be challenging, according to Jax. However, he says it’s only made him work harder and want to be more successful.

“I have a really strong support system,” said Jax. “With my parents, my Exploration Facilitator Emily Strickland and my entire iLEAD family behind me,  I am always determined to accomplish my goals.”

Going Forward

As you can see, Jax is a unique young man with a multitude of skills, talents, passions, pursuits and goals. That being said, it’s probably safe to say that Jax Malcolm is just getting started.

In the spirit of iLEAD’s high-quality project-based learning, Jax continually showcases, exhibits and shares his work publicly. Learn more about Jax and see his work at the following:

Ultimately, Jax has a strong message that he uses internally and is happy to share with others: “My mantra remains the same,” said Jax. “Go for what you want and don’t let anyone or anything stand in the way of your dream.”
