College & Career Planning

…world. To learn more, please visit our IB CP web page.  Concurrent Enrollment in a Community College Some learners opt to take classes at the local community college in 11th…

The Right Fit

SCVi’s approach to the college admissions process is driven by the following question:

How can I make a choice that is the “right fit” for my passions and future?

Our high schoolers spend time getting to better know who they are, where their passions lie, and how to find the college that best fits their goals.

SCVi graduates who choose to attend small liberal arts colleges tend to have a seamless transition from our small liberal arts-style high school culture. SCVi alumni attend and have been accepted to well-respected colleges across the country, including Franklin & Marshall College, California Institute of the Arts, William & Mary, and Sarah Lawrence College, as well as larger universities, such as UC Berkley, UC Davis, and UC Irvine.

College and University A-G Ready

A-G courses are required by the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems and represent the minimum requirements for admissions. When completed, learners have achieved a basic level of academic high school education for colleges in most states to prepare for university-level work. SCVi’s graduation requirements include all the classes needed to be A-G ready to apply to a four-year college.

The result is that all graduates of SCVi are prepared to apply to a four-year-college. Due to our personalized college counseling, many of our seniors are accepted to most or all of the colleges to which they apply.

The Role of International Baccalaureate (IB)

Our learners can select our International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IB CP), which is recognized throughout the world. To learn more, please visit our IB CP web page

Concurrent Enrollment in a Community College

Some learners opt to take classes at the local community college in 11th or 12th grade. Learners can take classes that might not be offered at SCVi and also acclimate to being on a college campus, earn college credit, and receive a weighted GPA.

Academic and College Counselor

SCVi is committed to personally guiding each learner in this process. SCVi’s Academic and College Counselor works diligently for every learner to help map out a plan to succeed in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development, and career development. This includes working with learners to develop four-year plans to meet graduation requirements and to explore and prepare for the wide range of options after high school.

We Are Committed to Your Success

SCVi learners meet with representatives from a variety of colleges and programs throughout the school year. Field trips to college campuses and visits to SCVi from representatives take place throughout the year, and all learners from 9th-12th grade are invited to participate. At SCVi, we are committed to guiding your learner and family through this process.

Report of Progress for Your Learner Coming Soon!

…a holistic, comprehensive picture of how our learners are growing as Lifelong Learners, Empathetic Citizens, Authentic Individuals, and Design Thinkers. The Report of Progress (ROP) is a comprehensive document of…

Equipping our learners for success is the cornerstone of iLEAD education. Learners are continually assessed on their progress toward meeting grade-level standards, learner outcomes, and their Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) goals. iLEAD Schools embraces the whole child, focusing on both social-emotional and academic skills. Therefore in lieu of a traditional report card, we share Reports of Progress with our families; a holistic, comprehensive picture of how our learners are growing as Lifelong Learners, Empathetic Citizens, Authentic Individuals, and Design Thinkers. The Report of Progress (ROP) is a comprehensive document of a learner’s strengths, growth, and areas where extra support may be needed. We would like to share some exciting new updates and changes to the ROP process. We have outlined these updates below. We hope the updated reports will better reflect our learners’ growth and measure what we value as a school.

The Report of Progress has three major components: (1) progress, (2) narrative, and (3) learner outcome. Read on to learn more about each.

Part 1: Progress

The first part of the ROP is progress (or grades). This is an overall snapshot of the learner’s progress in the first semester, including concepts, skills, and standards.

How is this done?

Each learner receives a progress descriptor appropriate for their grade level.

Grades are given using the new 1-4 numeric scale. For lower school, this follows the Proficiency Scale. For high school, this follows traditional letter grades.

Please note that the goal for each learner in lower school is to be at a 3, “Applying.” The 3, “Applying,” shows that a learner consistently has a complete understanding of the subject area being graded at semester’s end.

A 4, “Mastering,” is reserved for those learners who show an extended, different, or above-and-beyond understanding and application on multiple occasions and may be working above grade-level standards.

The goal for learners is to have all 3s by the end of the second semester. In the first semester, they will still be working toward demonstrating a complete understanding of the grade-level standards.

iLEAD Proficiency Scale

Part 2: Narrative

The second part of the ROP is the narrative. Each learner will have narratives written by their facilitator/s. It is our hope that these narratives are rewarding for you as parents/guardians, as they provide a clear picture of your child’s progress and educational experience. The narrative progress report recognizes that each child is unique and their development cannot fully be understood or assisted by using a checklist approach.

Part 3: Learner Outcome

The last part of the ROP is the learner outcome. At iLEAD, we believe that education should extend beyond traditional academic knowledge. In the course of a child’s journey with iLEAD Schools, our learners will engage with a relevant and rigorous curriculum that will prepare them for success personally and professionally.

Our purposeful approach revolves around the iLEAD Schoolwide Learner Outcomes, a collective vision that encapsulates our aspirations for each individual’s education. New for the 2023-2024 school year, the following learner outcomes serve as our compass, guiding us in shaping a child’s educational journey.

iLEAD Learner Outcomes

In order to align grading across both the academic and learner outcome scores, the proficiency scale above also applies to the learner outcome rubric. Our goal for learners surrounding the learner outcomes is that by the time they promote/graduate from our school, they are able to consistently and independently apply these skills and knowledge in their personal and professional lives. Because each Learner Outcome is complex in its aspirations, it is important to recognize that progress on the Learner Outcomes may be a little slower, and it may require multiple years to consistently and independently demonstrate complete understanding and/or mastery.

All three components of the first semester ROP will be available for families in the School Pathways Parent Portal. Click here for directions on how to access your Parent Portal. In addition, if your learner has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), then a progress report will also be sent home via email for your review. A hard copy can also be sent home at your request. More details will be coming soon regarding when your ROP will be available for your learner.

SCVi Charter School Culture: Real-World Experiences

…where teams of learners have come up with scientific research projects that successfully launched to the International Space Station for testing, or living history programs where learners re-create scenes from…

Consider this for a moment: What would be an ideal way to learn about flight and all that it involves? Do textbooks, lectures, and maybe a few videos help learners gain a firm grasp and understanding of the concepts?

What if, instead, kids could learn about the magic of flight through hands-on experiments in the classroom, logging time with flight simulators, seeing a glider up close on campus — and culminating their studies with an actual glider flight

At SCVi, learners have the opportunity to do just that through our partnership with a local soaring academy, and it’s just one example of how SCVi embraces real-world experiences as a way for kids to fully immerse themselves in the learning process.

Particularly in light of how we emphasize 21st-century skills and preparing learners for the work world, tangible experiences help elevate the learning process.

Other examples include our DreamUp to Space challenges, where teams of learners have come up with scientific research projects that successfully launched to the International Space Station for testing, or living history programs where learners re-create scenes from history.

Real-world experience is at the heart of what can make project-based learning (PBL) truly exciting, challenging, and rewarding for learners. When PBL is infused with real-world experiences, learners develop crucial skills while they’re still in school. Additionally, these experiences can provide learners with deeper insights into career areas they may want to pursue. Furthermore, kids find that their success isn’t defined merely by a grade but by the experience they gain through the process.

Finally, learning that incorporates real-world experience helps learners become familiar with professional environments. Besides learning the subject content, learners develop skills crucial in the work world, including clear and timely communication, thinking critically, problem-solving, and time management.

As part of a well-rounded PBL curriculum, real-world experiences are essential to iLEAD Lancaster’s mission to help kids be free to think and inspired to lead.

SCVi Art Facilitator Yoonhee Aprahamian Empowers All Learners to Create

and themselves. “If you visit her class, you experience tremendous joy. Even the greatest skeptics begin coming to class with an open mind,” Nastovska said. Looking Ahead Aprahamian is excited…

By Michael Niehoff
Education Content Coordinator, iLEAD Schools

Arts education is integral to iLEAD’s philosophy. In fact, the “A” in iLEAD stands for arts. At SCVi Charter School, iLEAD’s founding school, facilitator Yoonhee Aprahamian is a model of arts instruction at iLEAD.

Aprahamian, who teaches the upper school courses of Art 1, Art 2 and IB Art, believes that the role of arts education is to help all learners discover their talent and how to express it.

“Art is about finding out who we are,” Aprahamian said. “It’s a matter of how each of us sees things in our own way and using that to discover ourselves and the world.”

Originally from Korea, Aprahamian came to the United States 20 years ago to study art at the graduate level. Since then, she has discovered the joy of teaching.

The Value of Arts Education

Aprahamian reminds us that art allows learners to use large parts of their brain while building confidence, metacognition and social-emotional skills.

“Students love art because they get to use their hands. They get to create,” Aprahamian said. “And because they get focused and function at high levels, they leave happier and less stressed.”

Art and project-based learning align well, according to Aprahamian, because learners become better presenters who are more reflective and confident.

“As artists, learners are often sensitive and have a soft side. These are helpful in creating and communicating,” Aprahamian said. “However, that vulnerability can make it challenging to share their work publicly. But it’s important for them to learn to do so.”

Warm Demander

Leaning on her own past experience as a college art student, Aprahamian said she wants her learners to know the importance of sharing one’s art. “We discuss the idea of keeping art to oneself and how society deserves to experience any and all of our individual greatness,” Aprahamian said. “My role as an artist and arts educator is to let the learners know I understand them and have experienced the same thing.”

A post shared by Yoonhee Aprahamian (@ms.yunicorn)

This is why, in her classroom, Aprahamian is a “warm demander.” In the words of author Lisa Delpit, warm demanders “expect a great deal of their students, convince them of their own brilliance, and help them reach their potential in a disciplined and structured environment.”

In the spirit of a warm demander, Aprahamian said she knows that each of her learners has so many unseen, unrealized talents and that it’s her mission to help those get discovered and appreciated.

“I push them because I understand them,” Aprahamian said. “I am their art mom with lots of expectations and love along the way.”

The Inspiration

Aprahamian’s learners study art history, engage in research and have increasingly more choices in the art they pursue.

An artist of expressionism herself, Aprahamian challenges her learners in a variety of ways. For example, each October she encourages her learners to participate in the worldwide art project Inktober. Participants produce a new piece each day based on a daily prompt.

A post shared by Yoonhee Aprahamian (@ms.yunicorn)

Aprahamian recently launched a two-week project designed for learners to reflect upon 2020 while envisioning 2021 through art. Learners will identify what they want to throw out from last year and what to bring in or continue for the new year.

“We have lots going on in the world right now,” Aprahamian said. “This is a great way to deal with that in some creative and positive ways.”

Public Reactions

Colleagues are inspired by Aprahamian’s work with all her learners.

iLEAD’s Director of Humanities & Innovation Angie Nastovska said, “She has that unique ability to offer each learner the right thing. She empowers every learner to make and appreciate art.”

SCVi Upper School Director Nicole Padovich said that Aprahamian uses art as a pathway versus a product. “She encourages her learners to problem-solve and to try things in unique ways through the creative process,” Padovich said. “It is beautiful to watch her learners grow with confidence.”

iLEAD Arts and Community Outreach Coordinator Sara McDaniels respects how Aprahamian helps all learners gain confidence in their creative abilities, while also holding them to high standards. “I know how much she loves each of her learners, and that is why she is able to do this so skillfully,” McDaniels said.

Aprahamian’s learners echo these sentiments. Ashleigh Brown, an SCVi senior and IB Art learner, said, “She has an amazing ability to bring out the best work in her learners. I have picked up analytical and other skills that will be applicable no matter what I do. She’s taught all of us how to always look to better ourselves.

Ultimately, Nastovska thinks Aprahamian’s connection to her learners is what creates the environment for each of them to embrace both art and themselves.

“If you visit her class, you experience tremendous joy. Even the greatest skeptics begin coming to class with an open mind,” Nastovska said.

Looking Ahead

Aprahamian is excited about the future for all her learners. For the upper schoolers at SCVi, she is unveiling a new design technology course called Chasing Vincent. And for all levels, from Art 1 through IB Art, she encourages her learners on the journey of self-discovery. She realizes that she can’t embark on that journey for them but only guide them on the path.

“Art is the vehicle for something much larger than ourselves,” Aprahamian said. “The further they go, the more they find out about themselves and the world.”

Ultimately, she said she is excited to once again work with her learners face-to-face.

“I look forward to seeing them in the classroom and feeling that energy and vibe that we create together,” Aprahamian said.

“There is a synergy we have that is the best medicine ever.”

For those who may want to see more of Aprahamian’s own work in expressionism, she invites you to follow her Instagram account.

The aim of the IB program is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

IB learners are characterized by striving to meet the nine learning attributes set out by the International Baccalaureate Organization. In all of our IB classes at SCVi, we nurture these qualities in our learners. With the senior mock exams having taken place last week, there has been an inevitable focus on the qualities of being inquiring and knowledgeable. We aim to equip learners with the in-depth knowledge that they need to succeed, but we also aim to nurture learners’ curiosity and to develop their skills for research and independent learning. Our different classes all develop critical and creative thinking skills in order to serve all of our learners in the lifelong learning journey. You can discover more about the IB learner profile on their website, www.ibo.org, and at SCVi’s information morning on Tuesday, April 2nd, at 9 a.m. in the Village.

Senior mock exams have now finished. The facilitators will use these to identify what learners now need to succeed in the May exams. The assessment calendar is available here so that you can track the deadlines for internal assessment.

The schedules and all of the necessary information on exam conduct has been emailed to learners and parents. Please let me know if you need me to send this information again: abbie.neall@scvi-k12.org.

On Thursday, there will be the Spanish oral examination which is recorded and sent to examiners across the globe.

Emerging research suggests that educational environments comprised of two or more grades allow learners the flexibility to progress at their own pace along a continuum of achievement. In light of this, select grade levels at SCVi are multiage environments.

Multiaged learning allows learners to work on skills and concepts relative to where they fall in the learning continuum, regardless of age. This approach also facilitates great social interaction among older and younger learners and promotes leadership and positive social-emotional behaviors. Older learners may model problem-solving and communication skills for their younger peers, and in some cases, the roles are reversed! In addition, multiage education allows many learners to spend two consecutive years with the same facilitator, creating seamless transitions from one year to the next. Because the younger class returns for the second year, classroom culture, procedures, and expectations are already understood and integrated early in their school year.
