Finding the Right School Fit: SCVi Martinez Family

…the facilitators are amazing but Ms. Rose comes to mind. Since Elise came in midyear we were a little worried about how she would adapt to her new learning environment,…

Even though Lynn Martinez is a very busy mom – singing, acting, working in human resources, and managing her family of five – she took the time to share with us why she and her daughter, Elise, love Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School, a tuition-free TK-12th grade school in Castaic.

And yes, maybe like you, we’re wondering just how Lynn finds time. We’re guessing being an early bird and getting up at 5 AM is definitely part of the answer. Her favorite mocha frappe probably helps, too.

When did Elise start SCVi?

Elise started SCVi midyear in 5th grade and is going into 7th grade now.

Why did you choose to enroll Elise at SCVi?

Our family relocated to the Santa Clarita Valley in December of 2022 but before we did, I did my research on the various schools in the area and was instantly impressed with all the learning options and experiences SCVi offers. I quickly submitted the enrollment form and was so happy when Elise was accepted.

Who is a strong SCVi influence and why?

All the facilitators are amazing but Ms. Rose comes to mind. Since Elise came in midyear we were a little worried about how she would adapt to her new learning environment, but her facilitators were so encouraging and allowed Elise to explore, grow and thrive! What a great introduction to SCVi! We are so grateful for Elise’s first facilitators at SCVi.

What are some of the events you enjoy at SCVi?

Elise has enjoyed participating in the theatre arts program (and performing in this past spring’s play) and the DreamUp to Space program. She also enjoys Math Night, filled with competitions, games, food, and prizes.

What is your best memory of your time at SCVi so far?

I have two memories so far. Our favorite project has to be DreamUp to Space. This is an amazing program that allowed Elise to develop her STEAM skills by going through the hypothesis and research process, collaborating with her teammates on preparing the experiment to go to space and traveling to Florida to the Kennedy Space Center to see all the amazing exhibits and witness the launch of her experiment into space. The awards ceremony was so memorable and we are so happy Elise got to be a part of this program.

SO AWESOME.

Also, we were able to watch Elise go through her first official audition, casting and performance process with SCVi. It was such a joy to see her shine on stage. These experiences and so many more have confirmed that we made the right decision for Elise.

Fun Facts About the Martinez Family

The Martinez Family is a family of performers.

Elise’s dad is a professional percussionist/gaitero from Cartagena, Colombia, who has played with many well-known Colombian artists, such as Toto La Momposina, Petrona Martinez, Moises Angulo and Shakira. He won a Grammy for the studio recording of Vives by Carlos Vives. He has traveled the world with the National Ballet of Colombia and has taught workshops on his musical tradition throughout Asia, Europe, Latin America and the US.

Elise’s older sister is a professional dancer who has performed the traditional Colombian dances in Europe and has appeared as a dancer in a variety of TV shows in Colombia.

Elise’s mom is a professional actor and singer and has performed both on stage and screen with companies including East LA Rep and Bilingual Foundation of the Arts. She has traveled through the US and Europe singing with the Continental Singers. She also works for the City of Los Angeles in Human Resources for the Mayor and Council Offices.

Elise and her little brother are honing their artistic skills and we are so excited that SCVi is a place where Elise can explore all her interests and talents.

We love having Elise, her family, and all of our families at SCVi. Join us – our tuition-free TK-12th grade charter school is enrolling now!

About SCVi:

Santa Clarita Valley International School (SCVi) is a free public charter school empowering TK-12th graders to become conscientious, compassionate, and responsible citizens of the world. We use project-based and social-emotional learning concepts to inspire and motivate lifelong learners with the skills they need to lead in the 21st century. We incorporate technology into every component of our curriculum, and we value and encourage development of leadership skills by inspiring confidence and character in each of our unique learners. Join our innovative school today!

Why SCVi?

…you will see open spaces, unconventional seating and lots of color. More importantly, you’ll find our learners actively engaged and freely moving about in a student-centered environment brimming with creative…

  •   Because you’re looking for something different.
  •   Because you value a small school community that offers personalized learning.
  •   Because you want your children to be creative problem-solvers who pursue their passions.
  •   Because you want them to be Intellectual Entrepreneurs and successful, happy global citizens.

We are a public, free TK-12 charter school that focuses on the social, emotional, and cognitive development of the whole child, with a special focus on project-based learning, or PBL. Our revolutionary model embeds social-emotional learning (SEL) concepts into everything we teach, helping our students learn the valuable collaboration, teamwork, and problem solving skills our global economy will demand from them. Our PBL and SEL approach is widely recognized for cultivating confidence, leadership, and self-reflection in our students.

We’re a different kind of school, and we’re proud of the rigorous, challenging, and authentic educational program we’ve intentionally created here. Walking through our classrooms, you will see open spaces, unconventional seating and lots of color. More importantly, you’ll find our learners actively engaged and freely moving about in a student-centered environment brimming with creative expression — not unlike the campuses of tech incubators and innovators like Google, Facebook, Zappos, and Pixar.

At SCVi, we are committed to empowering our learners to become conscientious, compassionate and responsible citizens of the world. To that end, students tackle deeply engaging projects about real-world issues that require critical thought, sustained inquiry, and synthesis which culminate in regular Presentations of Learning (POLs) to their peers, facilitators, community members and parents. We are deeply entrenched in the Maker Movement, a philosophy borne of the tech industry that focuses on building, doing, and creating over mere consumption. We stress that taking action — essentially, being a maker — enhances our kids’ learning experiences by drawing upon their problem-solving skills and imagination and transforming them from passive users to active creators. Instead of reading answers, the maker movement encourages learners to shift from passive users to active creators.

Our strong connections to corporate, civic, arts, and STEAM organizations throughout the Greater Los Angeles area allow our learners access to an outstanding array of internship opportunities, and we are part of the Omega League for the California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body for high school athletics in Southern California. We also focus strongly on international experiences and global connectivity through projects and real-world experiences, including international travel opportunities and an exchange program with foreign students through our Cultural Bridges initiative.

We are proudly accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) in California, an honor that reflects our commitment to building and maintaining staff capacity to developing and refining educational effectiveness.

The end result? When our learners graduate, they are not only ready for college, they are ready to thoughtfully participate in and contribute to our global economy. iLEAD Learners: Free to Think, Inspired to Lead.

Finding Curiosity & Confidence at SCVi: Alum Emma Hild

…a free public charter school empowering TK-12th graders to become conscientious, compassionate, and responsible citizens of the world. We use project-based and social-emotional learning concepts to inspire and motivate lifelong…

What happens after our learners graduate from Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi), our tuition-free TK-12th grade school? Always curious (we’re passionate educators after all!), we reached out to our alumni to see what they’re up to these days. We were delighted to see how our small, close-knit school has made a big impact on their lives.

Take Emma Hild, class of 2018. She’s busy making a difference in child education in Huntington Beach right now but the fact that she’s thriving and engaging with curiosity in the world feels very different than when she began at our WASC-accredited school as a shy child. She credits SCVi with helping her build up her confidence to the point that by the time she graduated, she was senior class president! Here are some highlights from our conversation.

Who was your strongest SCVi influence?

Charlene Spiteri was definitely my strongest influence at SCVi. She is so strong and such a hardworking woman. I learned a lot from her while she was our mentor for the Ambassadors program

What were some of the events you enjoyed at SCVi?

I loved all the social events like Prom and Winter Formal. I loved volunteering as an ambassador at the benefit dinners. My absolute favorite events were sports. I was very lucky to start high school the same year SCVi began offering sports. I enjoyed attending practices with my friends and developing new friendships with teammates. I also enjoyed going to other teams’ games and supporting our school.

Were you involved in other activities at SCVi?

I was on the volleyball, soccer and softball teams my freshman through senior year. I was a part of the Ambassadors program my freshman and sophomore year. During my junior and senior year, I was the main leader of the program. I was also senior class president!

We love our project-based learning. Can you name a favorite project you worked on at SCVi?

Our Civil War Reenactment! I will never forget this project and being fully embodied in the time period we were learning about. I dressed up as an abolitionist and handmade small bags to sell.

How did SCVi prepare you for your life today?

I was never an outgoing person – if I was in any sort of social environment I wouldn’t leave my sister’s or mom’s side. Once I started attending SCVi – especially when I joined the Ambassadors program – I truly blossomed. In high school I like to say I was friends with everyone and that continued in college and in my everyday life. I started to love meeting new people and creating conversations.

What have you been up to since you graduated high school?

I graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a minor in cognitive science in 2022. After I graduated, I moved back to Santa Clarita and then in 2023 I moved to Huntington Beach with my college best friend. I started working for the Ocean View School District as an Instructional Assistant in a Special Day Class (SDC). I am working towards getting my special education teaching credential.

Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) School alum Emma Hild poses in graduation garb with her family outside while holding a red diploma from University of Utah.

Five fun facts about Emma

  1. I find any reason to travel! I went on a Europe trip with my brother Quinn in November of 2022. We went to six countries in six weeks.
  2. Before my dad retired from the LA County Underwater Unit he taught my siblings and I how to scuba dive.
  3. I found a new hobby in college – cooking! It became my stress relief and now I love to cook for all my friends and guests who visit me in Huntington Beach.
  4. Call me the psychologist of my friend group – I always put my friends and family as a priority in my life. Ultimately I just want to make sure everyone knows I am here to listen and support them.
  5. I have a side hustle working security for a private company with my parents. I took a course for my Guard Card and have worked private events for many celebrities! Super fun experience.

Thanks for sharing, Emma! We are so proud of you and all of our learners at our small, tuition-free school where we encourage and nurture lifelong learning and leadership. Enrolling now!

At iLEAD Schools, we have always been committed to providing a safe, equitable learning environment for all learners and staff. iLEAD staff engage in learning centered on equity, antiracism, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, all of which have been in alignment with our philosophy from the beginning. Common Core Standards

…to create students who are critical thinkers preparing themselves to be lifelong learners. Please visit the Common Core Standards website for more information about the implementation of these rigorous standards….

What are the Common Core Standards?

pacoima_counting-248x300Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade. The California Department of Education decides on the standards for all students in the state, from kindergarten through 12th grade. The California Department of Education helps schools ensure that all students are meeting the standards.

In 2010, more than 40 states, including California adopted the same standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students experience a consistent education. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the CCSS to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.

SCVi uses Common Core State Standards in accordance with California Department of Education requirements. We also strive to create students who are critical thinkers preparing themselves to be lifelong learners.

Please visit the Common Core Standards website for more information about the implementation of these rigorous standards.

SCVi Elementary Field Study Fall 2024The field studies program at SCVi gives our learners the opportunity to become personally involved in their learning through practical field applications and hand-on experiences. Field studies can result in greater achievement in all subjects. Real-life application of the lessons and Presentations of Learning help learners understand the relevance of what they are learning.

Field studies provide the following:

  • Practical experiences: real-world knowledge and application
  • Real examples of information discussed in the learning space
  • Interactions from which learners can discover their strengths, limitations, abilities, and skills
  • Integration of concepts and information from various disciplines
  • Increased knowledge and broadened understanding of the world and its workings
