It’s Not Too Late to Have It All: 5 Benefits of a Small School

…a free public school, but we are! Besides strong academics, you can do Spanish dual immersion, an Aerospace Pathway for all grades, and clubs like Robotics. 4. Social-Emotional Learning Learning

Santa Clarita Valley International School (SCVi) may be small in size, but our offerings and benefits are mighty! Our size is precisely what allows us to offer tuition-free academics, support that fits the individual child, and a community that cares. Here are five big benefits you can expect when your child attends our TK-12 in the greater Santa Clarita Valley.

Even better? It’s not too late to enroll. Don’t settle for anything less than the best for your child’s education.

1. Everyone Knows Your Name

At SCVi, no child slips through the cracks. Their social and emotional needs are known by all on our staff, and the characteristics that make them special are appreciated. Because we are a small school, every learner is known by name and has support from their facilitator, paraprofessionals, counselors, and administrators. This familiarity builds confidence, as students feel comfortable and supported. Our students know each other well, too: our small school TK-12 model enables students to spend years together, developing close friendships and sharing developmental stages and milestones.

2. Customized Support

Our smaller student base enables our teachers to understand the academic struggles and strengths of our students, and we have the time to creatively respond with opportunities for enrichment or support. Every learner has an individualized learning plan (ILP) and we offer many different ways of learning: self-directed, career-connected, arts-integrated and always play- and project-based. In our Upper School, we support you with college and career planning, customized just for you!

3. High-Quality Education

With the amount of care and quality we give each of our students, it’s hard to believe that SCVi is a free public school, but we are! Besides strong academics, you can do Spanish dual immersion, an Aerospace Pathway for all grades, and clubs like Robotics.

4. Social-Emotional Learning

Learning how to be a good friend, learner, and leader starts in elementary school at our free public TK-12 and never stops. SCVi integrates several social-emotional learning (SEL) programs, like Leader in Me, which emphasizes the importance of kindness and finding solutions that work for everyone. Our goal is to provide an environment in which our learners can create, explore, problem-solve, accomplish, support others, and become confident leaders. Once learners are older, they become mentors to our younger students, modeling study habits and behavior for our little ones to follow.

5. Our Families

We are a tight-knit community where staff and facilitators know every student – and their families – by name. SCVi parents love the high level of partnership they experience with our teachers and staff to support student learning. Parent contact with classroom facilitators is easy in our small school. There is frequent communication between teachers and parents about student performance, and parent help is welcomed. We value close relationships with our students’ families.

We are still enrolling at our small and secure TK-12th grade school – it’s not too late! Join our SCVi family and enroll today!

Celebrate National School Choice Week!

and celebrate our schools and the fact that families have exactly that: a choice of where their children can go to school and have the best learning experience that fits…

National School Choice Week shines a spotlight on effective education options for children and is the world’s largest celebration of opportunity in K-12 education. It’s a time when we showcase and celebrate our schools and the fact that families have exactly that: a choice of where their children can go to school and have the best learning experience that fits them! Thank you for choosing SCVi to be such an important part of your lives!

Want to share your appreciation for your SCVi facilitator? Download the template below and share a selfie with your letter at ileadschools.org/stories!

School choice is the process of allowing every family to choose the K-12 educational options that best fit their children. These options include all forms of education, from traditional public schools, to public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling.

Every child deserves an effective, challenging, and motivating education. Because each student has their own unique set of talents, interests, and challenges, a variety of options in education is crucial. School choice ensures that each student can find a learning environment that allows them to be inspired, successful, and happy.

SCVi Math Facilitator Increases Engagement, Collaboration with Virtual Escape Room

and community building. “This is collaborative problem-solving, and communication is key,” Kreiger said. “Learners have to talk things out, and this is a helpful skill in math problem-solving.” Kreiger, who…

By Michael Niehoff
Education Content Coordinator, iLEAD Schools

Engaging learners in math problem-solving can be difficult. Many educators have turned to challenges and games to increase participation. At SCVi Charter School, 7th grade math facilitator Carolyn Kreiger has successfully taken that concept to the virtual environment.

Like many schools, SCVi has been in distance learning since March 2020. During this time, third-year facilitator Kreiger has been experimenting with virtual escape rooms. Kreiger said that these are web-based rooms conducted through Zoom. Her learners work as teams to complete a puzzle or challenge in a fixed time. See Kreiger’s Halloween Escape Room as one example.

The purpose of virtual escape rooms, according to Kreiger, is to foster and create collaboration, teamwork and community building. β€œThis is collaborative problem-solving, and communication is key,” Kreiger said. β€œLearners have to talk things out, and this is a helpful skill in math problem-solving.”

Kreiger, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley and earned a bachelor’s degree in math at UC Berkeley, said that learners respond to the fun, social and game aspect of these challenges.

β€œLearning should be fun,” Kreiger said. β€œWith these challenges, learners choose their own teams and have fun working together for a greater purpose.”

Kreiger said that the learners respond well to the gamification aspects of escape rooms. β€œThere is a competitive aspect to this,” Kreiger said. β€œThere are also opportunities for each learner to shine based on individual roles, responsibilities and strengths.”

These experiences go beyond fun and allow learners to build skills. β€œLearners develop consistent thought processes, problem-solving and logic skills,” Kreiger said. β€œThey have to figure out what’s being asked of them and learn to figure out where the clues are, and that’s math in a nutshell.”

Kreiger said these experiences have helped her build instructional and facilitation strategies. β€œAs a facilitator, I can design with everyone’s ability in mind, and every learner works at their level,” Kreiger said. β€œ I am better able to see how to support different learners and their abilities.”

According to Kreiger, the successful teams are the ones who learn to delegate, assume different roles and responsibilities, and ultimately maximize the use of the group.

β€œI love to pop into breakout rooms and have learners tell me what they are working on and how they are approaching the problem,” Kreiger said. β€œAgain, it’s about their ability to discuss the problems they are solving.”

Kreiger’s learners seem to be thoroughly enjoying these immersive experiences. Chloe, a 7th grader at SCVi, said she enjoys the escape rooms because they provide the practice she needs in a fun and engaging way.

β€œFor me, studying at home makes it hard to communicate and talk to other learners about what to do, as I get somewhat nervous. Despite my shyness, the escape rooms make it so that we are able to share ideas and find solutions to each problem in a way that seems natural to me,” she said. β€œAlso, escape rooms are way more entertaining than just solving normal math problems because they allow you to search for the answers, and there are several ways to solve the puzzles.”

Although learners have not yet designed their own virtual escape rooms, Kreiger said the learners’ year-end project may involve this exciting challenge.

For educators interested in developing virtual escape rooms, Kreiger recommends using Google Sites. They are also welcome to contact her via email as well.

Going forward, Kreiger said she will continue to use virtual escape rooms intermittently. Currently, she is working on a probability project with this driving question: How can I create a game of chance where I win all the time?

β€œMy goal,” Kreiger said, “is to keep my learners challenged and engaged any way I can.”

At SCVi, it is our mission to create a learning environment where students are free to think and inspired to lead.

Throughout your child’s years at SCVi, we will provide many opportunities for them to express their voice and exercise choice in their learning. Our goal is to spark your learner’s curiosity and invite them to use their strengths and increase their capacity to solve real-world problems, work collaboratively with their peers, and present their learning to the community.

As a result, you’ll witness your child enjoying and retaining their academic learning, developing critical and creative thinking skills, becoming adept communicators, and consistently applying what they learn through meaningful action.

We welcome you on this exciting journey as we witness learners becoming confident, capable, and ready to take on the challenges of the world.

Enrollment Process

Thank you for your interest in SCVi! We are deeply proud of our progressive, project-based approach β€” and the level of independence shown by our learners. If you haven’t already, we recommend that you visit our campus before you apply. A visit will allow you to experience the joy and learning that happens every day. You can join a tour, attend a virtual information session, or meet with our registrar.

When you are ready to apply, here are the steps.

Step 1: Fill Out an Application Form

The first step is to fill out an application form. You will do this through our enrollment platform, Integrity6.

  1. Click on the Enrollment Application button. On this page, you will get information about important enrollment dates.

  2. Click on the green Start Application button. This will take you to a new page asking you to input your email address.

  3. Once you have entered your email, click on the green Get Started button.

  4. The system will email you a link to begin the application. Please note that this link will be active for only 36 hours. If you do not receive the email, please check your spam or junk folder.

  5. Click on the link in the email. This will take you to an application form. Please fill this out in full.

  6. You will receive an email confirming your application.

Step 2: The Lottery

SCVi is a free, public charter school that often has more community interest than available seating. As such, we’ve instituted a lottery according to state law to select new students for the upcoming school year. Our lottery for this school year took place on March 22. However, there are still grade levels with spots available for the 2024-25 school year. Please fill out an enrollment application to get started.

Step 3: Complete Paperwork

Once your child is offered a seat at SCVi, you will have 10 days to complete and return the necessary paperwork. We will provide you with a complete set of paperwork upon your offer.

Reminders

If your child is already enrolled, there’s no need to reapply each year. Kindergarten eligibility requires a child to turn 5 by September 1. For the 2024-25 school year, Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is for 4-year-olds turning 5 between September 2 and June 2.

Pack a Comfort Kit for Your Child: Grades TK-5

Dear Families, SCVi is committed to the safety and well-being of each child we serve. As part of that commitment, our staff is prepared for emergencies requiring us to shelter…

Dear Families,

SCVi is committed to the safety and well-being of each child we serve. As part of that commitment, our staff is prepared for emergencies requiring us to shelter in place. While we sincerely hope to never encounter such a situation, we believe in the importance of proactive preparedness. In the event of an extended shelter in place, we would like our learners to have as much comfort from home as possible. For this reason, we’re inviting parents and caregivers of learners in TK-5th grade to send comfort kits to the school for their children.

Below is guidance as you prepare your child’s comfort kit:

  1. All items must fit into no more than a two-gallon Ziploc bag. Your child’s name and facilitator’s name should be clearly labeled on the outside.
  2. Include a 3×5 note card. On the front of the card, write your child’s full name. On the back of the card, write your child’s emergency contact information and, if applicable, any food allergies or required medications for your child.
  3. Keep in mind that this is a comfort kit, not a survival kit. Suggested contents may include (but are not limited to) the following:
    • Encouraging note from home
    • Family picture
    • Change of clothes
    • Small toy or game
    • Fleece blanket
  4. Please no perishable items or batteries.
  5. Our intention is to return these kits at the end of the year, but please do not send valuables.

The list above is only a suggestion. Please include items that you know will reduce anxiety and bring comfort to your child. Thank you for your partnership as we work together to ensure your child’s safety and well-being.

Sincerely,

Chad Powell, School Director
Martha Spansel-Pellico, School Director
Alan Kingsley, Assistant School Director
