Pack a Comfort Kit for Your Child: Grades TK-5

Dear Families,

SCVi is committed to the safety and well-being of each child we serve. As part of that commitment, our staff is prepared for emergencies requiring us to shelter in place. While we sincerely hope to never encounter such a situation, we believe in the importance of proactive preparedness. In the event of an extended shelter in place, we would like our learners to have as much comfort from home as possible. For this reason, we’re inviting parents and caregivers of learners in TK-5th grade to send comfort kits to the school for their children.

Below is guidance as you prepare your child’s comfort kit:

  1. All items must fit into no more than a two-gallon Ziploc bag. Your child’s name and facilitator’s name should be clearly labeled on the outside.
  2. Include a 3×5 note card. On the front of the card, write your child’s full name. On the back of the card, write your child’s emergency contact information and, if applicable, any food allergies or required medications for your child.
  3. Keep in mind that this is a comfort kit, not a survival kit. Suggested contents may include (but are not limited to) the following:
    • Encouraging note from home
    • Family picture
    • Change of clothes
    • Small toy or game
    • Fleece blanket
  4. Please no perishable items or batteries.
  5. Our intention is to return these kits at the end of the year, but please do not send valuables.

The list above is only a suggestion. Please include items that you know will reduce anxiety and bring comfort to your child. Thank you for your partnership as we work together to ensure your child’s safety and well-being.

Sincerely,

Chad Powell, School Director
Martha Spansel-Pellico, School Director
Alan Kingsley, Assistant School Director

Our approach to discipline centers on restorative practices and Love and Logic, a straightforward parenting and teaching philosophy that holds that children learn the best lessons when they’re given a task, allowed to make their own choices — which may involve failing — when the cost of failure is still small. Those failures must be met with love and empathy from their parents and teachers. The Love and Logic methodology allows us to embrace each learner’s uniqueness while modeling and expecting appropriate behavior. We also provide regular opportunities for our parents to learn more about how to implement Love and Logic techniques at home. For more information on Love and Logic, click here.

Our restorative approach to student discipline views relationships as central to a healthy learning environment for our students. We strive to create a community of shared values where student participation is required, not optional. Our facilitators and administrators model these values so they’re viewed as an integral part of our school culture — not simply a slogan on a poster. The goal of our restorative justice philosophy is to help learners find solutions to behavioral or social issues through open dialogue rather than simply handing down an arbitrary punishment. For more on restorative justice, click here.

At SCVi, we adhere to the following expectations for school behavior:

Our disciplinary philosophy is firmly rooted in our commitment to facilitating social-emotional learning. We know that every learner is different, as are the challenges they face. We believe it is part of our job as educators to help our students learn self-direction and discipline. To that end, we include an assessment of social-emotional skills in our learners’ Individualized Learning Plans, Learner-Led Conferences, and Reports of Progress.

Support for Families

…education information, family fun nights, fatherhood programs, financial literacy, navigating child support, neighborhood/community action groups, nurse visitation for expectant and new mothers, parenting education, peer support groups, safe sleep program,…

Families in need of parenting aid to safeguard against their children entering the foster care system can find support through various channels. For residents of Los Angeles County, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) offers preventative assistance, while those outside the county can seek guidance from the California Parent and Youth Hotline. These resources aim to provide families with the necessary tools and support to navigate challenges and maintain stable and nurturing environments for their children. For further details and assistance, please refer to the information provided below.

Preventive and Support Services for Parents in LA County

Preventive and support services are designed to keep families together and prevent DCFS investigations in the first place. Throughout Los Angeles County, DCFS partners with CBOs to provide support services and assistance to parents and families who need help. Whether you have a referral or an open case with DCFS, or you’re simply an LA County resident looking for some help these programs can provide, including basic family needs, navigation including linkage to needed resources, child developmental screenings, education and special education information, family fun nights, fatherhood programs, financial literacy, navigating child support, neighborhood/community action groups, nurse visitation for expectant and new mothers, parenting education, peer support groups, safe sleep program, structured parent-child and/or family-centered activities, and more. Call (213) 739-6208 to speak to DCFS Preventive and Support Services staff.

California Department of Social Services Parent Resources

The OCAP is funding Parents Anonymous Inc. to offer the California Parent & Youth Helpline and Online Parent Support Groups to address increased stressors and concerns faced by families, parents and youth. Parents and youth can call, text, and chat 1-855-427-2736 for emotional support and referrals in English, Spanish, and other languages, every day from 8 AM to PM. Sign up for the Online Groups at caparentyouthhelpline.org. Other Parents Anonymous resources can be accessed on their website.

It’s Not Too Late to Have It All: 5 Benefits of a Small School

Santa Clarita Valley International School (SCVi) may be small in size, but our offerings and benefits are mighty! Our size is precisely what allows us to offer tuition-free academics, support that fits the individual child, and a community that cares. Here are five big benefits you can expect when your child attends our TK-12 in the greater Santa Clarita Valley.

Even better? It’s not too late to enroll. Don’t settle for anything less than the best for your child’s education.

1. Everyone Knows Your Name

At SCVi, no child slips through the cracks. Their social and emotional needs are known by all on our staff, and the characteristics that make them special are appreciated. Because we are a small school, every learner is known by name and has support from their facilitator, paraprofessionals, counselors, and administrators. This familiarity builds confidence, as students feel comfortable and supported. Our students know each other well, too: our small school TK-12 model enables students to spend years together, developing close friendships and sharing developmental stages and milestones.

2. Customized Support

Our smaller student base enables our teachers to understand the academic struggles and strengths of our students, and we have the time to creatively respond with opportunities for enrichment or support. Every learner has an individualized learning plan (ILP) and we offer many different ways of learning: self-directed, career-connected, arts-integrated and always play- and project-based. In our Upper School, we support you with college and career planning, customized just for you!

3. High-Quality Education

With the amount of care and quality we give each of our students, it’s hard to believe that SCVi is a free public school, but we are! Besides strong academics, you can do Spanish dual immersion, an Aerospace Pathway for all grades, and clubs like Robotics.

4. Social-Emotional Learning

Learning how to be a good friend, learner, and leader starts in elementary school at our free public TK-12 and never stops. SCVi integrates several social-emotional learning (SEL) programs, like Leader in Me, which emphasizes the importance of kindness and finding solutions that work for everyone. Our goal is to provide an environment in which our learners can create, explore, problem-solve, accomplish, support others, and become confident leaders. Once learners are older, they become mentors to our younger students, modeling study habits and behavior for our little ones to follow.

5. Our Families

We are a tight-knit community where staff and facilitators know every student – and their families – by name. SCVi parents love the high level of partnership they experience with our teachers and staff to support student learning. Parent contact with classroom facilitators is easy in our small school. There is frequent communication between teachers and parents about student performance, and parent help is welcomed. We value close relationships with our students’ families.

We are still enrolling at our small and secure TK-12th grade school – it’s not too late! Join our SCVi family and enroll today!
