SCVi, a WASC-accredited, free public TK-12 charter school in Santa Clarita, California, offers personalized, project-based, and social-emotional learning.

Within our positive learning environment, our learners think for themselves and develop emotional intelligence, life skills, and community engagement. We designed our program around the expectation that graduates would become entrepreneurs, leaders, and game changers.

Lower School

At SCVi’s Lower School, we focus on the whole child through creative, consistent application of project-based and social-emotional learning principles. SCVi’s engaging projects address real-world issues, requiring learners to practice collaboration, critical thought, sustained inquiry, and deductive reasoning.

Projects culminate in regular Presentations of Learning (POLs) to peers, facilitators, community members, and families. Our curriculum also features a strong social-emotional learning component that cultivates confidence, leadership, and self-reflection.

Our campus and open classroom environments create a sense of community that allows creativity to thrive. Our goal is to provide an environment in which our learners can create, explore, problem-solve, feel accomplishment, support others, and become confident leaders.

For our young learners, we incorporate play in learning. We believe unscripted, open-ended play is essential for cognitive and social-emotional growth. Extensive research demonstrates the importance of play for well-being and development.

Upper School

We consider ourselves a small liberal arts high school with a look and feel similar to a small liberal arts college. Our high school community benefits from a dedicated full-time college counselor, and many of our graduates have expressed that their transition to college was seamless. Click here for graduation requirements.

Core academic courses for SCVi 9th-12th graders are A-G approved, the standard for entrance to the University of California and California State University systems. SCVi also offers the Aerospace Career-Connected Learning Pathway and International Baccalaureate (IB) Career-Related Programme

Career-Connected Learning (CCL) integrates high school classes, community connections, work-based learning, and postsecondary planning and training. The goal of CCL is to support learners on their path to high-wage, high skill, in-demand careers in established and emerging industries. Learners choose their industry sector and pathway that best aligns with their interests and passions, ensuring the experience is meaningful and relevant to their goals.

Why Choose a Charter School in Santa Clarita Valley

…even more difficult. If you are new to charter schools, we’d like to take this opportunity to demystify the charter school choice and illuminate the incredible tuition-free education available for

The choice between private, public and charter schools can be overwhelming. From curriculum to mission, transportation to tuition, the seemingly endless options for personalization can make narrowing your decision down even more difficult. If you are new to charter schools, we’d like to take this opportunity to demystify the charter school choice and illuminate the incredible tuition-free education available for TK-12th graders at Santa Clarita Valley International Charter School (SCVi).

What is a Charter School?

A charter school is a publicly funded, independently operated, public school. Most charter schools are started from the ground up, by a team of passionate educators and parents who see a need in the community and decide to fill it.

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools open to all students. They operate under the terms of a charter that sets forth the school’s mission, program, goals, and ways to measure success. Charter schools are financed directly by the state and exercise increased autonomy in return for accountability in both academic results and fiscal practices. In California, charters are granted by local school districts for an initial period of up to five years, after which they may be renewed.

There are no special entrance requirements for students enrolling in charter schools. Placement is based on the number of available spaces for students who are chosen through a fair and objective lottery system.

Why Should My Child Go to a Charter School?

Charter schools create choices for parents and their students within the public school system. They increase educational opportunities for families and give children more access to quality education. In California, children can attend a charter school anywhere within the region. For example, your child can attend any charter school within your county of residence or an adjacent county. In Santa Clarita and the surrounding area, students can enroll in a tuition-free, public charter school outside their school district.

Whether it’s the educational philosophy, curriculum, or focus, each charter school is unique and offers different options from local district schools. Highly qualified teachers are frequently attracted to work at charter schools whereinnovative teaching practices and creativity are encouraged. Parents and community members are often welcome to get involved in different aspects of a charter school education. Families typically find unique learning opportunities available and an emphasis on social and emotional well-being.

Charter schools offer:

  • Smaller class sizes
  • Personalized attention
  • Support for learning
  • Focus on character development

Ever feel like school is all “Hurry and speed up!” or “No, you’re going too fast — slow down!” At Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School, a tuition-free TK-12th grade public school in Castaic, California, you get to set your own pace with our fantastic support and personal encouragement.

No One-Size-Fits-All at SCVi

SCVi has a wealth of strong academic options even though we’re a small TK-12th grade school. There’s no “right” pace or path for any of our learners — we realize that each child has their own learning journey and we’re here to support them. Learners are active participants in their learning process. Our goal is nothing less than:

  • learners who grow with curiosity and creativity
  • a commitment to a modern education that develops critical thinkers who lead with confidence
  • a campus and open-classroom environment that creates a sense of community that allows creativity to thrive in a collaborative learning experience.
  • providing a space in which our learners can play, problem-solve, feel accomplishment, and support others
  • empowering TK-12th graders to become compassionate and responsible citizens of the world

Our tuition-free school believes having learners set their own pace is an essential part of their inspired education. Each and every one of our learners has an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) to personalize their education and instruction.

We believe that learning should be interest-driven and self-directed. Learners develop an ability to set goals, monitor their own progress, and reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement. Our Learner-Led Conferences (LLCs) include a Report of Progress that contains a narrative of a learner’s development, both academically and socially.

We take the time to meet learners where they are academically and socially and help them learn and grow into their full potential. We are here to equip you for success!

We offer a safe space for our learners to explore, take appropriate risks, and gain confidence in themselves. Our campus is comprised of open classrooms allowing learners the flexibility to progress at their own pace along a continuum of achievement. It also promotes collaboration and project-based learning (PBL), the educational core of what we do.

High School: Pace Yourself

High school at SCVi is so exciting because of your options and the pace you set.

Have you heard of our International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IB CP)? The IB CP allows learners to participate in a career-related curriculum while at the same time providing access to an IB education. The aim of the IB CP is to provide learners with both an academic and practical foundation to support their future goals whether you decide to continue on to higher education or enter the workforce. Learners participate in the IB Career-related Programme during junior and senior years.

Or you could choose one of our career-connected learning paths. Did you know that in addition to a two-year-long performing arts path, new this year we are offering an Aerospace Career-Connected Learning Pathway?

Hard to know what to choose? Every 9th grader takes a special course called Freshman Seminar. In this course, learners hone key academic skills to be successful in high school and college, explore their aptitudes as they relate to careers, and experience each career-connected learning pathway at SCVi firsthand.

In addition, SCVi offers free dual enrollment through College of the Canyons so you can get college credit early and also see what college is all about.

Set Your Pace with These Essential Educational Tools

As you set your educational learning pace, here is what you can expect for all learners, whatever their style, at our WASC-accredited school:

  • Project-based learning! PBL is truly at the core of all we do. We love it because it promotes collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving in an exciting and engaging way.
  • Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is essentially building positive social character by supporting a learner’s development of emotional intelligence, life skills, and community engagement. SCVi integrates SEL directly into the curriculum. We use the Leader in Me’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People education series to promote engagement, belonging, and well-being.
  • Arts integration into our projects. We love using the arts as a way to express our creativity! Whether through dance, music, theatre, media, or visual methods, the arts are often viewed as the thread connecting multiple subject areas and are an invaluable part of the PBL process.
  • Advisory (Morning Meeting for grades TK-5) where learners and facilitators have an intentional time to focus on making connections, learning conflict resolution and exploring problem-solving ideas.

It’s not too late – we’re still enrolling for the 2024-25 school year!

Academic & College Counselor Ms. Nilsen: Passionate Advocate for Your Future

When you go on vacation, is one of your top leisure activities visiting the colleges in the area? If you’re Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School Academic and College Counselor Ms. Kris Nilsen, it is! Ms. Nilsen is passionate about helping the TK-12 learners at our tuition-free school find the best fit for their college and career aspirations. She also helps figure out what those aspirations are and how to design a fabulous future.

Please tell us about your background and how you came to be at SCVi.

I graduated college from Cal State Northridge in 1991 and worked at Rancho San Antonio Boys Home with boys who were on probation. I realized the important role a social worker had working with this population so I went to Cal State Long Beach and graduated with a Master’s In Social Work and a PPS Credential in 1996. I became a CPS worker for the Department of Children and Family Services for two years.

I then taught math at Pinecrest Middle School for five years and was the Dean of Students for three years. When my mom wanted to go back into the classroom and teach, she said, “You should be principal of the middle school.”

I went back to Cal State Northridge and graduated in 2006 with a Master’s in Education and an Administration Credential. I was the Campus Director of Pinecrest Simi Valley for four years, until Pinecrest Schools closed their doors in 2016.

Fulfilling my dream of being a high school counselor, I was hired at SCVi in August of 2016 as the Academic/College Counselor.

What do you love about SCVi? What sets it apart from other schools?

SCVi is amazing. I get the opportunity to work with all of our high schoolers individually and spend time talking about academics and life for them after high school. SCVi is a small school and embraces each and every one of our learners as family. I love when graduates come back to visit, which they do often, and tell me how they are doing. The relationships we form are for a lifetime.

Tell us about your role as Academic and College Counselor at SCVi.

I am in my 8th year at SCVi as the Academic/College/IB Counselor. I absolutely love my job and have a passion for college. I wake up every day excited to go to work and spend time with our high school learners. I work with a great team and thoroughly enjoy time with my colleagues inside and outside of work.

I was hired primarily to create a college-going culture at SCVi. In order for me to effectively guide families and learners with the college process, I received my College Counseling Certificate from UCLA. The program helped me become a well-informed college counselor in addition to my role as the Academic Counselor (schedules, transcripts, etc.). I have networked with other counselors in the field, have joined organizations (ASCA and NACAC) and have had the pleasure to attend many college and counseling conferences around the US. My favorite thing to do is to go to the conferences a couple of days early, rent a car, and drive around to colleges in the state.

Every year I take our learners to the National College Fair in Pasadena, where they speak to college admission representatives and mingle with other high school students. I proctor the SAT for our students so they can take a college exam in the comfort of their own school and with their peers.

What types of activities are you involved in at SCVi?

I am the senior advisor and involved in all activities having to do with our graduating class: prom, grad bash, senior retreat, senior sunrise, senior sunset, senior lock-in, graduation, etc.

With a colleague, we brought the Senior Defense activity to SCVi, where our seniors give a presentation on why they should graduate from high school. The panel of adults includes staff, parents, and community members. It is a great way for our seniors to end their high school career before heading out into the world.

In your opinion, what makes a great leader? How do you teach leadership?

I used to think that a leader was someone who was in a leadership role with a leadership title. Through all of my educational experience I have realized that to be a great leader, you need to lift others up and support them in their quest to be a great leader.

Collaboration, delegation, integrity, trust, loyalty, and hard work are essential parts of leadership; and modeling these traits shows others your strong leadership qualities. People always say it takes a village to raise a child; it takes a team of people who work together and respect each other’s opinions and contributions to make a great leader.

What does a day in your school life look like?

Usually I have kids in my office all day. If they have an open block or need a break they will come hang out in my office. I may have individual meetings with learners to discuss academics, grades, and college. Some days I support positive classroom engagement in classrooms.

Santa Clarita Valley International Charter School classroom wall decorated with pennants from colleges. Purple bulletin board sharing college information and the word “College” above it.

Five fun facts about Ms. Nilsen:

  1. I have been married for 31 years and have two daughters: Kasey 25 and Grace 21. We also have Dobby, a Borador puppy we adopted from the shelter.
  2. I love colleges and will take any opportunity to visit them when I visit other states.
  3. I have never traveled outside of the United States. I love the beach and the one place I have yet to visit is Italy.
  4. I enjoy playing pickleball with my family and 82-year-old father.
  5. And everyone seems to know that I absolutely love the color purple and have accessories and a purple car to prove it. I am also called “Sparklefairy” because I love sparkly things and always have a positive attitude.

We love how passionate our staff members are about our amazing learners! Join us – our tuition-free TK-12th grade charter school is enrolling now!

Facilitator Taking STEM Passions To Upper Stratosphere

…iLEAD community. “I could not have been happier when I heard the fabulous news of Dustin’s selection to the SOFIA AAA program — I may have cried a bit,” said…

One of the many tenets of project-based learning is authenticity – learning that is as relevant and real world as possible. When it comes to authentic science learning, iLEAD SCVi Facilitator Dustin Lengning has taken this to a whole new level.

Lengning has just been selected as an educator to fly on NASA’S SOFIA (the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) – a Boeing 747SP aircraft modified to serve as a mobile space observatory. SOFIA flies into the stratosphere at 38,000-45,000 feet and operates above 99 percent of Earth’s infrared-blocking atmosphere. This allows astronomers to study the solar system and beyond in ways that are not possible with ground-based telescopes.

All of this is part of the Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors Program that Lengning applied to this past fall. After recently learning he had been accepted, Lengning indicated how excited he is to be part of an elite program that allows researchers to observe from almost anywhere in the world. SOFIA enables studies of transient events that often take place over oceans where there are no telescopes. For example, astronomers on SOFIA studied eclipse-like events of Pluto, Saturn’s moon Titan and Kuiper Belt Object MU69. Other examples include the next flyby target for NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft to study the objects’ atmospheres and surroundings.

“I am excited about flying on SOFIA and seeing how the instruments work and the data that gets collected. Being a part of something historical is something I could only have dreamed of,” said Lengning. “I am extremely excited about which places in our universe we will be studying and what the astrophysicists plan for us.”

With training webinars already underway, Lengning will continue to learn everything he needs to know over the coming months in order to prepare for his flight this fall. His training includes blended learning professional development consisting of webinars, asynchronous content (an upper level astronomy course) and hands-on workshops. Additionally, Lengning will have several immersive experiences and continued collaboration with experts and other participants in the program.

Others in the iLEAD orbit are excited for Lengning and this unique opportunity as an educator. iLEAD Director of STEAM Activities Kathleen Fredette – herself one of the original six educators selected to fly on SOPHIA in 2011 – said that this is truly a full circle moment for her. She said that Lengning fits NASA’s SOFIA and the Airborne Astronomy Ambassador educator profile perfectly – someone who will take this incredible privilege and create connections and further opportunities for young people he serves in the iLEAD community.

“I could not have been happier when I heard the fabulous news of Dustin’s selection to the SOFIA AAA program — I may have cried a bit,” said Fredette. “It’s quite an accomplishment and I look forward to seeing what project ideas emerge from his experience.”

iLEAD Founder/CEO Dawn Evenson yet another Lengning fan who is excited about this new and unique journey.

“He has been with our organization from the beginning and we always knew he was destined for great things,” said Evenson. “He’s certainly proving us right.”

For Lengning, this is part of one of his primary goals – continuing to model lifelong learning to his learners, while also always considering new project ideas. He said he wants to continue to broaden his expertise to help both his learners and the entire iLEAD Community.

“For me, it is always about being better than I was; leveling up myself not only for me, but for my learners,” said Lengning. “I always want to push myself into bigger and better things so I am excited to see where this endeavor takes me.”

Lengning’s message to his fellow educators is to continue to challenge themselves in their own learning and positions as role models.

“Our learners are always looking up to us. When we do things that are hard, it tells them that they can do the same thing,” he said. “I hope my learners can see what I am doing and choose to also push themselves into scientific arenas that interest them.”

Mental Health Services & Resources

…purpose, establishing a new paradigm for education. We are a caring culture that values community, which contributes to a better society. Our focus on developing empathy allows for respect and…

At SCVi, we believe in the power of embracing a mindful approach to life, incorporating social-emotional learning as a way of developing well-rounded learners, and incorporating The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to aid children in meeting every challenge life sends them.

We do this not just because it’s a strong educational model but because we care about building strong kids. We’re committed to supporting our learners, no matter what they may be facing.

Academic growth is a high priority at SCVi, yet it is secondary to creating a safe, supportive learning environment in which the basic needs and well-being of our learners are ensured. Only then are they able to learn, interact, and grow into individuals who are prepared to excel in college, career, and civic life.

A growing number of young people experience severe challenges related to anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Whether due to societal pressures, academic stress, bullying, relationship challenges, or mental health factors, rates of suicide among youth continue to increase. A nationwide survey conducted by the Jason Foundation indicated that a teacher is the first person a student will go to when trying to help a friend at risk of suicide. Our staff and facilitators know this and endeavor to create and maintain an environment where learners feel safe addressing mental health topics.

Suicide Awareness: Identifying and Preventing Warning Signs

The following warning signs may help you determine if someone is at risk for suicide, especially if the behavior is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change.

  • Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
  • Looking for a way to kill themselves, such as searching online or buying a gun
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
  • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Increasing use of alcohol or drugs
  • Acting anxious or agitated, behaving recklessly
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Withdrawing or isolating themselves
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
  • Extreme mood swings

If learners believe someone they know is at risk of suicide, they should immediately speak with an educational facilitator, staff member, or family member or contact one of the agencies listed on this page.

Our Values

We are a people of purpose, establishing a new paradigm for education. We are a caring culture that values community, which contributes to a better society. Our focus on developing empathy allows for respect and invites an engaging, positive, rich environment. We believe people are natural-born learners. We provide opportunities for discovery and wonder to nurture a lifelong love of learning. Success is demonstrated through leadership, self-direction, problem-solving skills, creativity, collaboration, innovation, and service. We embrace stepping out of our comfort zone. We value joy, fun, choice, and voice, and we celebrate that our differences contribute to our common humanity.

Love and Logic

Love and Logic is a research-driven, whole-child philosophy founded in 1977 by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D., and informs how our facilitators build healthy, respectful relationships with learners.

Parenting With Love and Logic
An authentic, loving connection between parents and their children is the root of a healthy, thriving relationship built on trust and understanding.

  • The “Love” in Love and Logic means that we love our kids so much that we are willing to set and enforce limits, yet also means we do so with sincere compassion and empathy.
  • The “Logic” in Love and Logic happens when we allow children to make decisions and experience the natural or logical consequences. When we balance this with sincere empathy, they develop the following logic: “The quality of my life depends on the quality of my choices.”

DETAILS: BSC is now striving to prepare learners for all aspects of the modern world, with high-tech facilities and a more global curriculum. More than half the student body participates in community service through the Bunting Center for Engaged Study and Community Action, and attentive faculty add to a sense of commitment to both personal and community growth. A junior says BSC is a good choice for those learners who, “want to spend four years preparing, maturing, and challenging their minds so that they can make a difference in the world.”

The Explorations general education curriculum is designed to help learners develop effective communication and problem-solving skills, connect with their social and political world, and direct their own learning. It comprises 32 units across several disciplines, including fine and performing arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities, as well as three global and local citizenship courses. All freshmen take an introductory first-year seminar, and all seniors complete a capstone experience and a public presentation of their work. The Explorations term, a four-week term between the fall and spring semesters, allows learners to explore new areas of study, from cooking lessons to travel in China.

The courses at BSC are, “somewhat competitive” and “challenging but not impossible,” according to one senior. Each learner is assigned a faculty member who serves as his or her academic advisor from freshman convocation to graduation, an arrangement that learners praise for its effectiveness. Equal praise goes out to faculty in the classrooms, where 65 percent of classes have fewer than 20 students. An education major says professors, “love to challenge our beliefs and ideas by making us defend what we think.” The honors program allows 25 exceptional first-year students to take small seminars with one or more professors. The Krulak Institute coordinates opportunities for experiential learning, such as service-learning projects, study abroad programs, and an entrepreneurial scholars program.
