iLEAD and SCVi Receive K12 Strong Workforce Grant to Grow Aerospace Pathways for Grades 9-12

…Clarita Valley. SCVi is poised to collaborate with knowledgeable community partners to align the aerospace curriculum with industry needs.  Chad Powell, codirector of SCVi, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion of…

For over a decade, SCVi Charter School in Castaic has been known for its cutting-edge arts and aerospace programs. Since its founding in 2008, SCVi has been a beacon for the visual and performing arts. In 2014, aerospace projects became a focal point of their rigorous project-based learning curriculum.

Over the years, hundreds of students have learned the principles of flight, with 8th graders having the opportunity to fly gliders (or sailplanes) and some students even continuing to achieve their glider or small plane pilot’s licenses. In addition, students from 3rd grade through high school have collaboratively designed experiments that have been launched to the International Space Station to be conducted by astronauts and returned to SCVi for post-flight analysis.

Today, iLEAD California is proud to announce its award from the K12 Strong Workforce Program (K12SWP) Grant of $899,000. iLEAD California will use a portion of this grant as seed money to expand aerospace learning at SCVi by developing its 9-12 aerospace career and technical education (CTE) pathway. The goal of this new CTE pathway is to prepare students for high-demand, high-wage careers by increasing college access and workforce training.

Currently, TK-8th grade students attending SCVi learn about aviation and aerospace through engaging projects at each grade level. The launch of the high school aerospace CTE pathway will expose students to careers, skills, and dispositions needed to succeed in the aerospace industry, one of the leading industries in the Santa Clarita Valley. SCVi is poised to collaborate with knowledgeable community partners to align the aerospace curriculum with industry needs.

Chad Powell, codirector of SCVi, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion of the school’s aerospace program. “We are so thrilled to be able to build on the aerospace accomplishments of our TK-8 students with this new pathway for high schoolers, beginning Fall 2024! SCVi has long been known for our innovative projects in this high-demand field. We look forward to further preparing students for aerospace careers.”

The SCVi Fun Run Fundraiser is coming soon! This will be an all-school event to fundraise and promote a love of physical activity. All grade levels are encouraged to participate. Share your favorite way to be active in the Fun Run Learner Spotlight today, and get ready to put the fun into fundraising. The SCVi Snap fundraising site will be live next Sunday, January 28. Please see information about this below. Our learners will enjoy a kickoff rally on Monday, February 5, and the Fun Run Event Date is Friday, February 16.

Dear SCVi Parents:

The SCVi 2024 Fun Run is coming, and this year we are going big. We are aiming to replace the wood chips under our play structure with a modern, rubber turf. Estimates are still underway, but we are looking at roughly $30,000 needed to complete the project. It may seem like a big ask, but we believe that the payoff will be great. No more wood chips stuck in our learners’ clothes, shoes, or hair. No more splinters! No more mess in our cars, the school yard, and classrooms.

We are teaming up with Snap-Raise this year, the number-one online fundraising platform, to help us raise funds for our 2024 Fun Run fundraising campaign. Many programs in Santa Clarita have had great success using this platform, and we know we can have similar success. This online campaign is the safest and most efficient way for us to raise money.

TJ Toth, our Snap-Raise representative, has already built our web page. Please sign up and make your learner’s profile by Saturday, January 27, by using the QR code below or clicking the link. TJ will make the page go live on Sunday, January 28. Once your learner’s profile is set up, we ask that you add 20 emails. Once the campaign goes live, you will get a text message notifying you, and this is when you can click the link to log back in to send your texts and share on social media. Once you do that, the fundraiser will take care of itself. We are looking for your outside social network, family members, friends, and co-workers to help us raise the funds we need to make a lasting impact on the way our kids play.

How to get started:
Your Fundraiser: 2024-SCVi School Fun Run

Use the QR code, join code, or join code link to help your learner sign up (or log in if you’ve already created an account).

Join link: raise.snap.app/join_code/270041542

Join Code: 270041542

Help your child invite friends and family to donate: Enter 20 (or more!) email addresses. Examples: parents, grandparents, other relative, family friends, neighbors, parent’s coworkers, former coaches, etc.

Remember: it’s all online, so you can invite relatives and friends from across the nation or even another country!

Once the fundraiser is live, we will text your registered learner a link.

Please post the link to your social media account and share with your contacts.

We appreciate your support and being a part of the SCVi community.

With gratitude,

Scarlet Foundation

3rd and 4th Graders Explore Airport Communications

…to make informed decisions during takeoff, landing, and taxiing. Through this unit, our learners are discovering how effective communication between pilots, air traffic controllers, and the community ensures airport safety…

Our 3rd and 4th graders are diving into the world of aviation with hands-on projects, exploring airport communications!

Here, Milan A. is making a windsock, a conical textile tube designed to indicate wind direction and relative wind speed. It is commonly used at airports, airstrips, and helipads to provide pilots and air traffic controllers with visual information about wind conditions. The windsock will point in the direction from which the wind is blowing, and its shape and angle can also give an indication of wind speed. Pilots use this information to make informed decisions during takeoff, landing, and taxiing.

Through this unit, our learners are discovering how effective communication between pilots, air traffic controllers, and the community ensures airport safety and impacts our daily lives.

Greetings, iLEAD community,

Last spring, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced our learning community to physically distance, we launched a weekly campaign with the goal to reunite our facilitators and families and lift their spirits. Every week, a new Together Tuesday video featured photos of families, learners, and staff throughout the iLEAD nation — a reminder that we’re all in this together.

Now, as we begin a new school year with distance learning, Together Tuesdays will be making a comeback, now twice monthly. We’d love to see your contributions.

To ensure your submissions are included, please click here to submit your photos. Photos received by the Friday before each Together Tuesday are eligible to be included.

We’re all in this together, and we can’t wait to see your photos!

If you have any questions, simply reply to stories@ileadschools.org.

Sincerely,
The iLEAD Team

SCVi Back to School Tips & Tricks

…August 13: get all the benefits of a small school community for free. Join our supportive, tuition-free WASC-accredited school and enroll today! About SCVi: Santa Clarita Valley International School (SCVi)…

What time is it? Back to school time! If your child is excited or nervous, it’s okay, because at Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School, a tuition-free TK-12th grade public school in Castaic, California, we’re here for all the feelings! And we are here to support your entire family – here are five ways to prepare for heading back to the classroom.

Prep Your Routine

At our small public school, we love finding ways to help our learners succeed – inside and outside the classroom. Having a routine at school means students know what to expect and you can do the same at home.

-Come up with a list of things to do before and after school. Add them to a plastic sleeve, attach to the refrigerator and use a dry erase marker to check them off.

-Have kids help fold laundry while listening to a podcast once a week and then have them put it away so they know where everything is…even if it’s all shoved in one drawer.

– Pack a lunch now or wait until the morning? Setting up a routine time is half the battle! And remember, our SCVi Cafe offers free breakfast and lunch meals every day.

Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School students stand in front of a doorway wearing bags slung over their shoulders and hugging side by side while smiling.

Registration

Missed orientation? Not enrolled yet? Have a sibling entering school for the first time? Let us help and we’ll make sure everything is in order right from the start. Save the stress of the first day for things like outfits instead of paperwork!

Shoes

You’re trying to get out the door with lunches and backpacks and dogs whining and your patience fraying and you look down and see your child oh..so…slowly…putting their shoes on (once they find them) and then asking you to help tie those pesky laces. Pro-tip: make it easy on yourself. Practice now or invest in slip-on sneakers or laces that don’t need tying (they really exist!).

Sleep

What’s trickier than adjusting to the classroom routine? That’s right, the bedtime routine! Add excited emotions to the mix and it can make for less sleep right when kids need it most. Start thinking ahead about what you want the sleep routine to look like – do you read a story or get some audiobooks from the library queued up? Maybe dinner (and dessert!) time needs to be earlier? Learn more tips and the importance of a quality sleep routine here

Share All the Fun

With all the uncertainty of a new school year, make sure you remind your child that SCVi is FUN! Our engaged TK-12 uses project-based learning (PBL) and incorporates arts education, STEM, and our new aerospace learning pathway so learners have a blast (get it?). Students learn in multiage, open classrooms where self-directed learning is encouraged (could a Tyrannosaurus Rex have catapulted into outer space when that big asteroid struck?) and no question is too tough to ask…or answer!

School starts August 13: get all the benefits of a small school community for free. Join our supportive, tuition-free WASC-accredited school and enroll today!

The iLEAD Schoolwide Learner Outcomes serve as our compass, guiding us in shaping each child’s educational journey.

In the course of a child’s career with iLEAD Schools, our learners will engage with a relevant and rigorous curriculum that will prepare them for success personally and professionally.
