SCVi 8th Graders Soar in First Glider Flights

…anatomy of birds, current experimental gliders, and meteorology are woven in to extend and enhance knowledge, giving meaning to research and writing. Special thanks to Skylark North Glider Flight School…

This weekend, 8th graders took their first glider flights!

Tapping into our curiosity about flight, iLEAD Student Aerospace Projects’ Soaring Aeronautics Project answers the question β€œHow do things fly?” and introduces learners to the forces described by Newton and Bernoulli.

Through this project, learners use the engineering design process to fabricate and launch their own gliders, interact with a full-scale glider, learn from glider pilots about flight controls and aerodynamics, and fly a glider!

Preflight training on simulators supports the development of flight and navigation skills. The history of flight, anatomy of birds, current experimental gliders, and meteorology are woven in to extend and enhance knowledge, giving meaning to research and writing.

Special thanks to Skylark North Glider Flight School for hosting and guiding the learners!

Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) Charter School is an authorized IB World School for the Career-related Programme (CP).

IB World Schools share a common philosophyβ€”a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.*

SCVi is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IB CP). The IB CP allows learners to participate in a career-related curriculum while at the same time providing them access to an IB education. The IB CP is a unique program that is tailored to learners wishing to prepare for a career. The aim of the IB CP is to provide learners with both an academic and practical foundation to support their future goals whether they decide to continue on to higher education or enter the workforce. Learners participate in the IB Career-related Programme during their junior and senior years.

Advantages for IBCP Graduates:

  • Career Readiness: Learners develop skills directly aligned with career pathways, preparing them for success in their chosen fields.
  • Global Perspective: The CP curriculum emphasizes international-mindedness, helping learners understand and appreciate different cultures.
  • Critical Thinking: CP learners engage in a rigorous academic program that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication.
  • Personal and Professional Skills: The CP helps learners develop essential skills such as time management, ethical decision-making, and collaboration.
  • Higher Education Opportunities: Graduates are well prepared for higher education, with many universities recognizing and valuing the CP qualification.
  • Real-world Experience: Through the CP’s career-related studies and service learning, learners gain practical experience and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

To learn more, read SCVi’s IB CP Guidebook.

* Mission Statement from the IB:

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, the organization works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Arts Education Month: The Role of Arts Education at SCVi

…poise them for success. Engaging with the Community Beyond academics, SCVi encourages learners to share their talents with the community. From presentations of learning to service projects, your learner will…

As a parent, you want the best for your child’s education, and that’s why it’s crucial to understand the power of arts education, especially at schools like SCVi. We believe in a holistic approach to learning, where arts education isn’t just an add-on but an integral part of every subject. This means your learner gets the benefits of creativity and expression across all their studies.

Arts-Integrated Learning

At SCVi, your learner won’t just paint for an art class or sing for a music class; they’ll use artistic methods to understand other subjects like math, science, history, and literature. For instance, they might create sculptures to grasp math concepts or act out historical events to better understand them. This approach helps make learning more engaging and memorable.

Hands-On Projects

One thing you’ll notice at SCVi is the emphasis on hands-on projects. These aren’t just about getting things done; they’re about using creativity and collaboration to solve real-world problems. Whether it’s making presentations, writing music, or choreographing dances, your learner will learn how to express themselves creatively while mastering important skills for their future.

Fostering Creativity

At SCVi, we believe creativity isn’t just for artists; it’s a crucial skill for success in any field. By nurturing your learner’s artistic talents and encouraging them to think creatively, we’re helping them develop the resilience and innovation they’ll need in today’s rapidly changing world. Whether they dream of becoming artists, scientists, or entrepreneurs, creativity will poise them for success.

Engaging with the Community

Beyond academics, SCVi encourages learners to share their talents with the community. From presentations of learning to service projects, your learner will have opportunities to make a positive impact using their creativity. This not only builds confidence but also demonstrates to them the importance of giving back and making a difference.

In short, arts education at SCVi isn’t just about painting pretty pictures; it’s about unlocking your learner’s full potential. By integrating arts into every aspect of our learners’ education, we’re preparing them to succeed academically, creatively, and socially.

Happy Arts Education Month!

Greetings, iLEAD community,

Last spring, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced our learning community to physically distance, we launched a weekly campaign with the goal to reunite our facilitators and families and lift their spirits. Every week, a new Together Tuesday video featured photos of families, learners, and staff throughout the iLEAD nation β€” a reminder that we’re all in this together.

Now, as we begin a new school year with distance learning, Together Tuesdays will be making a comeback, now twice monthly. We’d love to see your contributions.

The first video of the 2020-21 school year will go live on September 15. To ensure your submissions are included, please click here to submit your photos. Photos received by the Friday before each Together Tuesday are eligible to be included.

We’re all in this together, and we can’t wait to see your photos!

If you have any questions, simply reply to stories@ileadschools.org.

Sincerely,
The iLEAD Team

SCVi embraces the whole child, focusing on both social-emotional and academic skills. After our beginning-of-the-year assessments and in lieu of the traditional parent-teacher conference, the learners, facilitators, and parents/guardians collaborate annually to create an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP). ILPs help to guide instruction and social-emotional aspects for each learner. Everyone works together to reflect on, monitor, and make adjustments to the ILP as needed.

The primary goal of the ILP is to ensure that each child reflects on their own achievements, both academic and social-emotional, and identifies areas in which they need to improve and evaluate their progress toward those outcomes, starting at a basic level when they are younger and improving their ability to self‐assess over time.

Throughout the year, facilitators and learners meet to look critically at what they have accomplished, reviewing assessment data and setting forth new goals when their original goals have been accomplished. A portfolio is maintained that showcases the learner’s reflections throughout the school year.

Enrollment: 1,337

Acceptance Rate: 54%

DETAILS: BSC is now striving to prepare learners for all aspects of the modern world, with high-tech facilities and a more global curriculum. More than half the student body participates in community service through the Bunting Center for Engaged Study and Community Action, and attentive faculty add to a sense of commitment to both personal and community growth. A junior says BSC is a good choice for those learners who, β€œwant to spend four years preparing, maturing, and challenging their minds so that they can make a difference in the world.”

The Explorations general education curriculum is designed to help learners develop effective communication and problem-solving skills, connect with their social and political world, and direct their own learning. It comprises 32 units across several disciplines, including fine and performing arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities, as well as three global and local citizenship courses. All freshmen take an introductory first-year seminar, and all seniors complete a capstone experience and a public presentation of their work. The Explorations term, a four-week term between the fall and spring semesters, allows learners to explore new areas of study, from cooking lessons to travel in China.

The courses at BSC are, β€œsomewhat competitive” and β€œchallenging but not impossible,” according to one senior. Each learner is assigned a faculty member who serves as his or her academic advisor from freshman convocation to graduation, an arrangement that learners praise for its effectiveness. Equal praise goes out to faculty in the classrooms, where 65 percent of classes have fewer than 20 students. An education major says professors, β€œlove to challenge our beliefs and ideas by making us defend what we think.” The honors program allows 25 exceptional first-year students to take small seminars with one or more professors. The Krulak Institute coordinates opportunities for experiential learning, such as service-learning projects, study abroad programs, and an entrepreneurial scholars program.

SCVi Child Care Options Coming Soon

…which many families in our community relied on for child care, we have been actively working to develop programs that will meet our enrolled families’ needs before and after school…

Dear Families,

We are excited to share that child care options will be available at SCVi starting with the 2024-25 school year. Understanding the impact of the closure of PlayMakers, which many families in our community relied on for child care, we have been actively working to develop programs that will meet our enrolled families’ needs before and after school as well as during school breaks.

Starting this August, SCVi will offer before-and-after-school care. In addition, we are developing a summer camp program. For the foreseeable future, both programs will maintain the same fee structure that PlayMakers previously offered. We are also happy to inform you that we will be able to accept CCRC payments for families who qualify.

While we are still fine-tuning the details, our goal is to provide convenient, safe, and supportive child care options for all our enrolled families. For more information or to register for these programs, please contact Business Manager Donna Wood at donna.wood@scvi-k12.org.

We look forward to welcoming you to our SCVi family and serving your child care needs.

Yours in service,

Martha Spansel-Pellico & Chad Powell
SCVi School Directors
